Bug ID: 43215 Summary: regression | freeze | nfsw.exe Product: Wine Version: 2.10 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: critical Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: nfsgraine@gmail.com Distribution: ---
[Need for Speed World] The game freezes after I confirm my chat language/connect with other players.
I am using latest wine-staging 2.10(tried normal wine too). An experienced friend told me this particular problem gets solved with wine 1.6.x.
I don't know how to build a wine by myself so I tried a 1.6.2 with q4wine but now I get another problem, when I'm not on lowest graphics settings, it crashes with error "out of directx resources". Even at lowest settings, when I open a map or join a race, basically make it use more resources, it crashes with this directx error. I'm guessing it's because 1.6.2 didn't have support for my Pentium G4560's iGPU.
So now I can't effectively use 1.6.2 as well although it does fix the former freeze problem.
I would be grateful if this gets fixed.

--- Comment #1 from winetest@luukku.com --- You should never really downgrade wine. You should always report the issues you encounter as fast as possible if there is regression. wine 1.6 series is really old. It's something like 2-3 years behind in development you are missing lots of features and bug fixes if you downgrade to something like that.

You should never really downgrade wine.
Does using q4wine and the wine-1.6.2 folder I had from a former playonlinux installation count as downgrading? I'm not really experienced, I thought this way didn't affect my system wine since the bin/lib files are somewhere else. I can still revert back to the system wine using q4wine though.

1.6.2 doesn't give me the freeze that is caused when I join chat/connect to others. However I still get the DirectX crash after a few seconds ingame.

It was an EA MMO. It was shut down two years ago but this one connects to a homebrew server by some dedicated group. I assure you that this has nothing to do with the server. The developer runs his on Ubuntu, he had the same freeze with wine versions that are newer than 1.6.x. However unlike me, he doesn't get this critical error "Out of DirectX resources" when on 1.6.2. I'm assume it's because my CPU(I don't have a GPU card, therfore iGPU) was released in 2017 while wine-1.6.2 was released in 2014 I believe.

--- Comment #3 from winetest@luukku.com --- To my understanding Qwine and POL arent in general supported. It's one of the easiest ways to test old builds.
I have no idea what "Out of DirectX resources" means but I quess it will be easier to fix/locate the issue than the freeze you are having. Basically if the 1.6.x builds didnt have the freeze but later versions do then this is regression that should be bisected and it needs someonen who can compile wine himself and find the commits that broke it. It's not that hard but I would prefer testing bugs over doing bisecting. You also need to have access to the game and server. To reproduce the issue.
Do you happen to know your iGPU's recognizing id? It consists of 2 numberic codes. This can be googled too.

--- Comment #4 from nfsgraine@gmail.com --- I'm definitely not the one to be able to perform those tasks. I'm not really sure about the 'recognising id' but I'm using a pentium G4560, I think it has an HD610.
Also, about access to the server and game. I can't do the diagnostics but I do have access to the game and server. Well, the server has an 'offline' version. The exact same freeze happens with the offline version too.
The "online" one is based on the offline but I guess they configured it to connect to their IP in there. Maybe the source code might help? The developer posted both the offline and online but I don't really understand all of these.
The 'soapbox' are the servers.

--- Comment #7 from nfsgraine@gmail.com --- I fixed the directx problem by increasing my video memory settings with winetricks. So I consider my case solved. However the chat freeze is still a regression problem. So a fix is welcomed. Thanks for replying winetest@luukku.com

--- Comment #11 from Gijs Vermeulen gijsvrm@gmail.com --- It seems that the Windows launcher can no longer run under wine. I get the following message when launching it (version 2.2.2):
"Launcher will close. Below is a Summary of the Reason: Running Windows Build on Unix is Not Allowed".
Resolving ABANDONED. If you can still reproduce, feel free to reopen.
