Bug #: 33773 Summary: EVE Online hangs on focus restore with latest X.Org Product: Wine Version: 1.5.31 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: vorot93@yandex.ru Classification: Unclassified
Sometimes when I restore focus EVE Online visuals hang. That is, I see the cursor but can't see anything of the game, just what I had before focus restore.
Problem is present in latest X.Org git crack (xorg-edgers PPA) and not in packaged Stack.
Using Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander x86-64

While it's not impossible that this is an issue in Wine, you'll probably want to do a bisect on X first then, to see what changed there.

When I asked for that bug to be closed the crashing had seem to have gone away. But, even so, using Eve without the virtual desktop workaround still hasn't been as friendly as it used to be before the Wine regression occurred back in 2008. I've stuck with the virtual desktop workaround.
I can't remember the details, and Wine 1.6 has gone splat on me at the moment, but it did still seem somewhat buggy.
The first question is: Are you using the virtual desktop workaround ( ... wine explorer /desktop=... ) in your testing?

--- Comment #4 from blueeagle79@gmail.com --- I have this same issue running Wine 1.7.10, Xubuntu 13.10 x64.
I've noticed that moving the window around too much is prone to crashing it. And I can reliably crash it by attempting to re-size the window. Any other ideas on this? Really frustrating, as this basically makes it impossible to move the Eve window onto either of my smaller two monitors from the larger two.

--- Comment #5 from triangle400@gmail.com --- I get this behavior in a lot of my games. I know EvE Online And Civilisation5 crash because of it. In World of Warcraft i get, uh, incorrect geometry beeing rendered at high speed with the character as a focal point... But i think i haven't seen it hang solid like the other 2.
When it hangs i can move the cursor, alt-f4 is unresponsive, video and game is stuck. Trying ctrl-alt-del or alt-tab freezes the comp. This happens to me without "tabbing out" or anything. Not running anything in the background that would steal the focus.

--- Comment #6 from triangle400@gmail.com --- Since this last post, i've read up on what others were doing on EvE forums. Making a virtual desktop and running the game in a fixed window helped for me. So far anyway. Doing so however, i got a distorted background. Like i was inside a sphere with the background on the outside, also dragging it around that fixed itself but then i got a point of view like 200-300km out of my actual ship. Everything eventually went back to normal after a few jumps.
Hope it helps someone...

--- Comment #7 from hanska2@luukku.com --- Is this still valid? x.org gets updated every now and then and also wine, if you use develop version.

--- Comment #8 from Ken Sharp imwellcushtymelike@gmail.com --- It's still valid if it's still an issue. But then we still need an X and/or Wine regression test, depending where the problem lies.
