Summary: NOLF GotY: Sluggish mouse reaction when in zoom mode Product: Wine Version: 1.1.16 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: liquid.acid@gmx.net CC: jb.faq@gmx.de
Mouse input in NOLF is generally a bit "inprecise", but one thing is broken for sure.
Some weapons feature a zoom mode, but when this zoom mode is switched on it's almost impossible to accurately use it since the mouse input becomes very sluggish then. Turn zoom off again and mouse input stabilizes again.
I suppose that's a dinput problem, but I'm not sure about that.
The wine-0.9.46 testresult here (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=305&iTe...) mentions a "weird mouse problem", but I'm not sure if that's what I'm encountering.
Haven't tried any native DLLs though.

--- Comment #2 from Tobias Jakobi liquid.acid@gmx.net 2009-03-07 05:45:31 --- http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14752 <- mouse isn't working at all (no mouse input "reaches" the game)
This bug: mouse input "reaches" game but is sluggish in zoom-mode.
That's a HUGE difference ;)

--- Comment #3 from Tobias Jakobi liquid.acid@gmx.net 2009-03-19 20:46:46 --- I tried it with native dinput and dinput8, same problem here.

--- Comment #4 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2009-09-22 14:00:10 --- Is this still an issue in current (1.1.29 or newer) wine?

--- Comment #5 from Tobias Jakobi liquid.acid@gmx.net 2009-10-24 06:54:01 --- Yeah, tested with wine-1.1.31 - hopefully the whole XI2 stuff can finally fix this.

--- Comment #6 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2010-12-20 22:15:16 CST --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for a year. Is this still an issue in current (1.3.9 or newer) wine?

--- Comment #7 from Tobias Jakobi liquid.acid@gmx.net 2011-01-01 13:09:37 CST --- Now using a fresh wine-1.3.10, but the mouse issue doesn't seem fixed yet. Almost impossible to use weapons in zoom mode...

I tried installing the demo version from the link above. Unfortunately after apparently successful installation the launcher complains that the NOLF.REZ can't be found. When launching "lithtech.exe" it says that no game resources can be found.

--- Comment #13 from bsdsmn@tutanota.com --- as said by OP, there's lag in general with mouse movement, it is very bearable when in normal mode, but when you zoom in the sluggishness increases considerably, it's still possible to manage in normal difficulty, but it does affect the gameplay and I can't imagine having to deal with it at higher difficulties. wine version 1.8rc1

--- Comment #15 from Matheus matheus.venturini@acad.ufsm.br --- This appears to not be a bug in Wine, this is a bug with the game itself. From a quick search on the internet I found these posts:
"I seem to have weird frame rate drops whenever I zoom in with a sniper rifle, or press the switch function keys. I've installed the Stutter/Frame Rate fix, but it hasn't solved the issue. Any one know how to resolve it?"
"I have the same issues with the GOTY Edition (running on Windows 10 64 bit with jackfuste's widescreen patch). So far I managed to find nothing on this sadly, seems like Win 10 just has a problem with the game."
"I'm having this issue on Windows 10 as well, along with the fact that the framerate stutters heavily whenever any popups occur, mostly when I'm swapping ammo types. Anyone got a fix for this? Seems like there's a DrawDLL or something for Windows 8 but it doesn't seem to be there for Windows 10."
https://nolfgirl.net/Unityhq/forums/topic/5892-frame-rate-drop-when-zooming-...
"These are the problems I am having with my “NOLF:GOTYE”:
*Slight lagging when I zoom in with a weapon to aim (the camera starts lagging and doesn’t get better until i zoom back out).
*Graphic problems in general. When I play a map and start looking around, and especially if I move the camera quickly, there are these “glitches” that kind of ruin the game experience.
*When I go underwater in any map, everything goes glack."
Note: the graphics problem when going underwater is a bug that affects Intel iGPUs, I haven't tested to see if this happened to me.

In the posts above it's mentioned that there's lag when a HUD overlay appears ingame, but this hasn't happened to me and neither has the zoom lag. On the other hand, picking up items causes a purple "vignette" effect to display and it results in a log of lag for me. It runs perfectly otherwise.
There is a mod called NOLF Modernizer which gets rid of the lag that can happens in these situations.

--- Comment #16 from Matheus matheus.venturini@acad.ufsm.br --- I tested the "Mega Mix Pack" demo with 7.18 and the lag when picking up items (which I mentioned in comment 15) and using the scope didn't happen, however I played the full game with 7.17 and 7.16 and it did happen in those versions.
The "Mega Mix Pack" demo can be downloaded here: https://www.moddb.com/games/no-one-lives-forever/downloads/no-one-lives-fore... Run Game/NOLFDEMO.exe as SETUP.EXE crashes immediately.
How to reproduce:
1. Launch the demo 2. Select single player and choose the mission "the assignment" 3. Mouse + WASD to navigate, spacebar to skip cutscenes, exit the training facility (it's at the end of the hallway with the "Advanced Field Tactics" door) 4. Select "default equipment" then "start mission" and the first mission should begin, where you are given a sniper. Use the scroll wheel to use the scope. There should be lag when using it.
The "1.0" demo of the game can be downloaded here: https://archive.org/details/TheOperativeNoOneLivesForeverDemo This version also crashes when trying to run SETUP.EXE, but Game/NOLFDEMO.exe will ask for the CD to be inserted in the tray for it to launch.
In case it is helpful, the game is open source and it can be accessed here: https://github.com/osgcc/no-one-lives-forever
The source code of the NOLF Modernizer mod can be found here: https://github.com/haekb/nolf1-modernizer
Also, the game bug where the screen goes black when underwater which I mentioned in comment 15 didn't happen to me when playing with 7.17/7.16.
