Bug ID: 39284 Summary: Keyboard entry problems in Turbocad 7.1 Product: Wine Version: 1.7.0 Hardware: x86 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: blocker Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: tedhansen@sasktel.net Distribution: ---
TurboCad 7.1 will not respond to keyboard entry when in drawing mode. Does respond to some keyboard entry when a pop-up dialog box is being used. Keyboard entry in drawing mode is usually key shortcuts to things like "snap to grid" so it may be the program is not accessing the key entry shortcut definitions (I have no ides how this works inside Turbocad though). This bug does not seem to be specific to any wine version, rather, it seems related to the linux version but it is getting worse. With Ubuntu 12.04 and wine 1.4, no bug. With Ubuntu 14.04 and wine 1.4, bug as described above. With Ubuntu 14.04 and wine 1.6, bug as described above. With Ubuntu 14.04 and wine 1.7, no keyboard response, unable to install.

--- Comment #3 from Ted Hansen tedhansen@sasktel.net --- using wine 1.7.50 on ubuntu 14.04

--- Comment #4 from Ted Hansen tedhansen@sasktel.net --- I have done some tests. It appears that Turbocad will actually respond to the keyboard input but response is extremely slow, sometimes the key must be held for 4 seconds or more before the program responds.
It also appears that this IS a bug which is dependent on the wine version. The last wine version which works correctly is 1.4.
I performed tests using Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04 and wine versions 1.4, 1.61, 1.62, 1.7.18 and 1.7.50. All tests were done with a clean, new Ubuntu install, first using wine installed from the distribution repositories then with wine packages installed from the ppa according to the instructions on winehq.
The ~.wine folder was deleted between each version tested so each test was with a clean, new wine install.
On ubuntu 12.04: - wine 1.4 was OK. - with 1.6.1, 1.6.2 and 1.7.18 keyboard response was so slow as to make the program unusable 1.7.18 is the highest ubuntu package available for 12.04
On ubuntu 14.04: - attempting to install wine 1.4 actually installs 1.6.2. Turbocad runs but keyboard response is too slow for it too be usable. - with wine 1.7.50 the program installs but will not run. It freezes at the second opening screen ("start a new file, open and existing file, etc."). cpu use goes to 100% and, if left for any length of time, the entire system freezes and must be shut down by cutting the power.

--- Comment #5 from Ted Hansen tedhansen@sasktel.net --- More testing: Ubuntu 14.04 and wine 1.7.50: The program actually does work ....eventually. It freezes at the opening screens using 100% cpu (which also locks the rest of the system) and loads up almost 1 gig of memory. Then, after a long wait (up to 5 minutes), it gets past the opening screens and runs normally without even the poor keyboard response which occurs with wine 1.6.2. Cpu demand drops off to about 10% and it frees up almost all of the memory. I am unable to provide a backtrace because it will not start from command line, just gives a "failed with error 2" followed by "failed with error 3". (I used to be able to start it from command line using "wine (path to exe file)").

--- Comment #6 from winetest@luukku.com --- Can you test 1.8, 1.9 or 2.0 series of wine? The higher the number the more fixed are merged into wine.

--- Comment #7 from Ted Hansen tedhansen@sasktel.net --- Tested with wine 2.0-rc6 on Ubuntu 16.04:
There is still a problem starting Turbocad v7.1 after installing but there is a workaround. Turbocad first starts a program called "FrontLine.exe" which (I think) gives some startup options. It then starts "TC70.exe" which is the actual program. "Frontline.exe" does not work.....but it is not needed.
The workaround is to replace "Frontline.exe" with a copy of TC70.exe renamed "Frontline.exe". (Program location is /home/(username)/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/IMSI/TCW70/Program/...)
Another, more serious, issue is that when working from a brand new install, TurboCad v7.1 will not properly create a new file "from scratch". "Create from scratch" (ie no template)is one of the startup options. There are many errors but particularly dimensioning does not work properly. Dimension lines are all over the place and the text is inverted.
However, once an existing file has been opened, edited, and saved, this problem disappears. It is then possible to create a new file "from scratch" and work with it with only a few (minor) bugs. These are:
1. "Modify element" dialog boxes do not display properly. It never has...this is an old bug (Bug 16574). The buttons to close and save are off scale. The workaround is to press "Tab" then "Enter" and the dialog box will close and save any changes. 2. There are some errors in special characters. In particular, the symbol for diameter (⌀ - Unicode character U+2300) displays as a letter "u" with an accent under it. This is new.
...and the plus side, adding light sources when rendering 3D objects now works! It used to totally freeze the computer.
I will do a new report in the app database.
