Some help files contain embedded sounds (WAV files). Wine winhelp does not play
these, instead giving console output like this:
fixme:winhelp:HLPFILE_BrowseParagraph Got an embedded element
*33792,2,BBCTITLE.HLP+AA2.WAV
when each sound should be played.

I ran WinHlp32.exe from Windows 98 under Wine 1.2rc5 to view BBCTITLE.HLP.
Clicking a link (each of which leads to a page with a sound playing under
Windows) gives a dialog box titled MCI Error, saying "Cannot find the specified
file. Make sure the path and filename are correct." The same dialog appears
once more. Console output as follows:

It looks like in addition to fixing winhlp32, some work would need to be done
on MCI if this feature is to be implemented.

Still an issue with recent Wine?
The example file no longer exists on RS.

The bug is still present in Wine 1.3.35. I have re-uploaded the file to

Still present with Wine 1.7.44. Layout of that help file is quite severely
broken too, in Wine winhlp32.

The layout problem has been greatly enhanced by the patch in bug 20977.
The sounds still not play, however one can see lines as
fixme:winhelp:HLPFILE_BrowseParagraph Got an embedded element
*33792,2,BBCTITLE.HLP+MATHS.WAV
in the log.

How do you exactly try to open the file?

I can't find such a command...Would think it's with the winecfg, wineboot,

Try: wine winhlp32 filename.hlp
