Summary: Full Tilt Poker loses sound after a minute Product: Wine Version: 1.1.21 Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: NEW Keywords: download Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: scott@open-vote.org
I'm pretty sure this is not a pulseaudio issue as it's been occurring for years, though I haven't reported it until now.
In Full Tilt Poker you can hear a few sounds - a slight ding when it's your turn, the sound of cards being delt, and chips stacking. In Wine, however, they stop completely after about 4 or 5 hands have been played.

--- Comment #3 from Jeffrey LaPointe slackguru@q.com 2010-03-04 20:03:15 --- Actually, Running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, Wine 1.1.39 and the latest Full Tilt Poker with updates, I only occasionally lose sound and when I do lose sound it is immediately preceding a crash of the software.
Sometimes when the crash is imminent the FTP software successfully clears itself out of memory removing all traces of explorer.exe, services.exe and wine itself...
Other times it freezes in memory and needs to be killed.
I have tested every part of "Play Money" games and all seem to work very well. I spent an entire half hour in Rush Poker just a moment ago.
You may need to configure wine and choose ALSA instead of Pulseaudio. My ALSA works really well.
Its the intermittent crashes that I really want to address. I just need a push in the right direction and I will get it all figured out. I'll see if google, or the winehq wiki or forums have the push I'm looking for.

I updated to WINE 1.1.40 and still suffered intermittent loss of sound. After discussion in #winehq on irc.freenode.net, I found that the default sound driver, ALSA, was not enough for FullTilt Poker. I had to also enable the OSS driver and loss of sound and resulting crashes have stopped.
Let me know if this helps.

(The above backtrace is mine, I wrote a message and attached it, but apparently this bug tracker eats your comment when you attach a file.)
I'm running Wine 1.1.42 on Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 on a 4-core machine. I get a crash within 1-10 minutes of joining a table when using ALSA.
It is easy to work around by choosing OSS in winecfg.
But it is actually Wine code that is crashing (divide by zero in ALSA_AddRingMessage()+0x36), so I thought it would be best to report it here.
It's probably a very easy bug to fix if you're a Wine dev familiar with the architecture of Wine and ALSA. (Alas, that is not me.) Simply inspect the code of ALSA_AddRingMessage, if you're dividing something in the first dozen or so lines, add code to check if the divisor is zero and handle appropriately. Since Full Tilt lets you play for free, you can even download the game yourself to reproduce the behavior and test the patch.

--- Comment #8 from Jeff Smithey jeffsmithey@gmail.com 2010-09-12 14:48:33 CDT --- I have been having this same problem... I would lose sound after a minute then get the report a bug issue thing then I could play a little bit longer until the program actually crashed. Have tried killing the programs and opening them...
Now, the problem is that Full Tilt Poker will not open at all... I was getting an ftp_ccr.exe problem or something? I tried all different versions of Windows 98 through Windows 7.

Try
WINEDEBUG=+wave,+alsa
without knowing which alsa sound card driver , it is hard to debug

--- Comment #11 from Shimi Chen shimi.chen@gmail.com 2010-09-19 08:33:49 CDT --- Sound lost and soon after app becomes non-responsive and must be killed after playing for a varying amount of time. Especially in Rush Poker. Application also notifies of a crash and sends a bug report to Full Tilt Poker.
Attached the terminal output during a crash.
Using latest wine 1.3.3 on ubuntu lucid 64-bit.
