(I'm very new to Linux) My two sources are Software Manager and Synaptic Package Manager. BOTH list 1.6.2 for WINE. So I am at a loss as to what I must do to retest in 3.x - ...
Please advise.

I think you need this: https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu Remark:
I think someone who knows where to address this should let ``Ubuntu`` know that they should update things. This is what I get when try to install wine:
sudo apt-get install wine
[sudo] password for louis: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following NEW packages will be installed: . . wine wine-gecko2.21 wine-gecko2.21:i386 wine-mono0.0.8 wine1.6 wine1.6-amd64 wine1.6-i386:i386 winetricks 0 upgraded, 53 newly installed, 0 to remove and 37 not upgraded. Need to get 0 B/146 MB of archives.
So why does Ubuntu offer this ancient wine-version by default? That`s the reason I guess we get so many bugreports using wine-1.6.2...

--- Comment #4 from Louis Lenders xerox.xerox2000x@gmail.com --- And another question: Is the program free / have a trial that we could test?
ECW32.EXE --> Is that EasyCAD or what is the name of the program you try to run?

--- Comment #5 from John john_a_jones@hotmail.com --- As I said before: I'm very new to Linux. I have had disastrous results removing packages before. So when something works - I am going to stick with it. The package distribution seems to be working on my LINUX Mint system (Software Manager and Synaptic Package Manager). Anything outside of that arena is fraught with issues. Going to the referenced https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu is a good example of my hesitation.
First statement: "If you have previously installed a Wine package from another repository, please remove it and any packages that depend on it (e.g., wine-mono, wine-gecko, winetricks) before attempting to install the WineHQ packages, as they may cause dependency conflicts." Give me a break!! I have NO IDEA what packages depend on WINE! ! ! You would think something would be provided???? I have NO IDEA what Unintended Consequences might occur if I remove packages. (Been burned real bad before doing just that!) I do have applications running perfectly, right now, under WINE. Do I want to expose those applications to whatever?? Don't think so.
Second statement: "If your system is 64 bit, enable 32 bit architecture (if you haven't already):" When directions ASSUME a higher level of experience than what I possess I automatically shut down. This instruction SHOULD explain HOW to determine the architecture as well as what to do to enable 32 bit... Just mind boggling the aloof attitude.
I believe the software is available for a 30 day free trial. ECW32.exe is EasyCAD (Evolution Computing) Contact is John Steen john.steen@cox.net (been working with him on this issue).
HOW CAN THE PACKAGE DISTRIBUTION MECHANISM DELIVER UNSUPPORTED PACKAGES??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

--- Comment #6 from Nikolay Sivov bunglehead@gmail.com --- Wine Wiki can't and shouldn't try to document every aspect of user interaction with your OS of choice. I'm sure you can find plenty of information online about how to add/remove Debian repositories, run package update process, install packages, and configure your package management in general.

--- Comment #7 from Louis Lenders xerox.xerox2000x@gmail.com --- To get some progress in this bugreport, could you run the program like
WINEDEBUG=+relay,+seh,+tid wine ECW32.EXE >>log 2>&1 and attach the (bzipped2) file ``log`` to this bugreport? Thanks

Not sure but it might crash because no printer is installed??? Could you try if installing a printer, like cups-pdf changes anything? Does printing from``wine notepad`` work?

--- Comment #10 from Louis Lenders xerox.xerox2000x@gmail.com --- In private emailconversation reporter confirmed that setting up a printer fixed this issue for him. For now I`m guessing this is a bug a in the application, so invalid.
Just like in Bug 44518 I guess this could be checked by running the program in windows and remove all printers. If anyone feels the urge to test this, and thinks resolving invalid is not appropriate, please feel free to reopen this bugreport
