Rome Total War no longer starts as of 1.3.26 - was working on 1.3.24 and 1.3.25
. This affects both the demo and the full game version. Just start the demo and
it will crash shortly.

+tid,+seh,+ddraw,+d3d,+d3d_surface log?

It fixes the crash, however there is still one problem. During the loading
screen, there is no background picture, just the loading bar.

I did a quick check and 1.3.26 with a84275075d4a20a9a7f42eda01585d34f31b56d4
reverted works fine, so this is indeed also a regression caused by your commit.

Applying both patches on top of 1.3.26 fixes the startup crash for me. I still
see the problem mentioned in comment #8 , but this may be the same issue as in 
bug #19959 .
