after installing the latest version of MTGO (linked above), when running the updater (Kicker.exe) it hangs. I successfully ran the updater with an older installer, and the only difference in the log from the console is: err:ole:CoInitializeEx Attempt to change threading model of this apartment from multi-threaded to apartment threaded

This is suspicious. That means there's a failure in "ves_icall_System_Diagnostics_Process_ProcessName_internal". Then again, maybe that's supposed to happen.

please retest with recent Wine version 1.7.x containing Mono 4.5.x
The updater works fine here with .NET Framework 4.x client profile (required by installer) and .NET Framework 2.0 (required by kicker and managed DX installer).
$ sha1sum MTGOinstaller.exe 4cf30aaa4a8de1a219a20ebf5c24c9025893dec2 MTGOinstaller.exe
$ du -sh MTGOinstaller.exe 836M MTGOinstaller.exe
$ wine --version wine-1.7.17-92-ge2bf516

I'm refining the summary to target native .NET Framework here (see http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14060#c45 for rationale).
If you still get a hang with Mono 4.5.x, you might create a separate "Mono" bug.
