Bug #: 30511 Summary: Guild Wars 2 launcher crashes with "assertion m_ioCount failed" Product: Wine Version: 1.5.2 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: rmlipman@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 39906 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=39906 launcher crash log
After downloading around 1GB of data, the Guild Wars 2 launcher crashes with "assertion: m_ioCount". I can restart the launcher and it picks up from where it left off, so eventually it does finish. A crash log from the game is attached.
I've also seen this crash very infrequently on the login screen. The beta hasn't started yet so I don't know if the crash occurs ingame as well.

--- Comment #1 from rmlipman@gmail.com 2012-04-24 11:47:03 CDT --- The launcher download saves files to where the exe is put. It's not an installer.
If the launcher completes and you need to reproduce the error again, delete gw2.dat and it will redownload.

I'm experiencing the same issue, except that the launcher starts over at 0% after the crash -> I cannot finish the download.
It always starts at 0% when you launch it. If the files remaining counter is resetting after the crash, then there's a problem. Otherwise as long as the file counter is going down it will finish eventually.

--- Comment #5 from voidcastr cephryx@gmx.net 2012-07-02 03:59:50 CDT --- I just noticed that the crash frequency seems to correlate neither with the download volume nor with the time elapsed: Just had a crash after 14min/572MB.
Also, from your log it appears that you are using a 32bit wine environment - I hereby confirm that this happens for 64bit, too.

--- Comment #6 from voidcastr cephryx@gmx.net 2012-07-03 04:20:40 CDT --- Created attachment 40844 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=40844 "gw2autorestart" script v0.3 (voidcastr)
Because I kind of felt like a monkey restarting the launcher/setup/patcher over and over again, I wrote a bash script in order to automate this process. It works for me, and that's why I'd like to share it with you (see attachment "gw2autorestart").
Copy it to the directory your Gw2Setup.exe is in, make it executable and run it from a terminal like ./gw2autorestart Gw2Setup.exe
Side notes: - So far, I could only test it for the purpose of the game's installation (= initial download). - Updates to the launcher itself *might* break the script which is simply polling for the presence of the launcher's crash window every couple of seconds (sadly, there is no console output indicating the launcher's "crashed" state BEFORE the crash report window is closed). - Yes, my bash skills are quite awful. - No, I'm NOT responsible if the script breaks any of your $STUFF.

While downloading/updating the game, I too had the m_ioCount crash every 450 or 750mb. Which is about an hour or two each. However, near the end of the last beta, I had an ingame crash that also said m_ioCount, and i am attaching the crash log. As you can see it's the same as when updating. When this crash occurred I could still play briefly with the crash alert up. With other crashes the game window shut down right away. My speculation is the client might have been background updating new content.

It's worth looking at, but I think I've also seen it fail without the same handle.
Just trivial reuse of same handle doesn't crash wine itself, since http://kegel.com/wine/conntest.c passes.

I have written an own installation script to minimize this problem. The advantage is it doesn't need to be copied to any special location and it doesn't require any files downloaded from Guild Wars 2 manually. It works just as a wrapper for the installer. You can choose the installation path with the official installer and the script will do the rest. It doesn't even need any arguments so the usage is as simple as possible. But the script is still not perfect. @voidcastr: You have already written an autorestart script. Maybe you have some suggestions for my script.
But I would prefer a real solution for this problem. Does anybody know how this crash appears or how it can be solved?

The error

The weird behavior on closing and reusing the same socket afterwards disappeared at least.
This bug occurs very often (after 30 sec, 2 min max) and is very annoying, as it prevents the client to upgrade flawlessly. It doesn't prevent from playing fortunately!

Does this help? http://source.winehq.org/patches/data/104725 I can't currently test it, that's why I'm asking.
I've tried this patch with wine 1.6.2 (applies cleanly) and 1.7.27 (does not apply at all, as about half of the changes are already in, but I manually applied the rest) and it doesn't seem to improve the situation.
Worse - the new patcher (updated yesterday) crashes immediately after displaying the download screen - so the game has basically became unplayable.

--- Comment #38 from Teras teras@luukku.com --- This was very strange experience.
The installer started ok. It did some update. I think it updated the installer itself. Then sudedenly the hole x session is hanged. I only could swap to ctrl+alt+f1 and back. Doing that few times killed the installer meanwhile.
Cant see anything really suspicious at console.

Then sudedenly the hole x session is hanged.
You have a bug in your X or graphics driver. Wine does not have the access to hang a system.

--- Comment #42 from Ganni87 jonfarr87@gmail.com --- Created attachment 52048 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=52048 GW2_Launcher_No_Crash
Something I've noticed:
It seems to me that this crash occurs only on slow internet connections. 2 Weeks ago my ISP reduced my internet connection to a 1mbit download speed (I went over my monthly bandwidth limit) and since I could only download at 120kb/sec I have been getting this error a lot when updating Guild Wars 2 (restarted the launcher like 50 times with this error till it finished).
Now my internet is back to it's original speed of 30mbit (that's like 3.6mb/sec) and I'm downloading the game from fresh using same Wine version and prefix as last time.
As you can see in the screenshot I have already downloaded over 8GB and haven't had any crashes or other errors so far. This leads me to believe the crash is dependent on how fast files are being downloaded.
I will update my post again when it finishes all the files.

Update to my previous post above:
The launcher has finished downloading all the files without any error all in 1 go. I will limit my download speed through my router and rerun a shorter test to see if I can reproduce the crash.

--- Comment #44 from Joseph Flatt joseph@flattfamily.com --- I am also having this issue. As was noted by Ganni87, it appears to be far more likely to occur when my internet connection is slow.
I am using 'wine-1.8-rc2 (Staging)' on Manjaro Linux with kernel version 4.2.
I have tried both the 64-bit and 32-bit GW2 launcher, and they both exhibit the same behaviour.
Most of the time it downloads ~2MB before crashing. This can make the updates that finish in a few minutes on a Windows machine take hours to complete on my Linux computer.

--- Comment #45 from Xen wine@xenhideout.nl --- I did not experience this crash in 1.7.35 while downloading and using the 64-bit version.
When I tried to download the libraries for the 32-bit version, it did happen. But this was still while using a 64-bit prefix.
Ie. the entire download for 64-bit program and 64-bit prefix completed without error. The much smaller download for only the 32-bit libraries, did experience one crash.
