Summary: Spore, Sims 3: Only sound and cursor, no graphics, with intel cards Product: Wine Version: 1.1.23 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: pamarca@gmail.com
Spore and the sims 3 can be installed and loaded on computers with intel graphic cards, however, they only show a black screen with the cursor, and sounds. Playing around with the cursor and clicking shows that one can interact with the menus, but there is no graphical output besides the cursor. I know, though I havent tested it myself, that these games can be played in windows with the same hardware.
I know Intel drivers haven't worked very good for some time now, but the latest versions can handle native linux games like nexuiz and openarena very well. What is it then, that doesnt allow this games to be properly displayed with wine? Is it a wine problem, or is it the intel drivers that dont support certain technologies that are needed?
My testing computer is an hp pavilion dv2000 with ~2500 mb RAM, an intel dual core proccessor, and the video card appears listed as Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller. Though, I think this problem should be common to many more games and intel cards.
I selected the wine version as 1.1.23, but I have used every version since 1.1.10 with the same result.

--- Comment #1 from Mike Kaplinskiy mike.kaplinskiy@gmail.com 2009-06-14 17:55:20 --- Anything older than i965 does not have GLSL support (due to no branching support in the gpu, according to mesa). Wine defaults to GLSL, so try setting UseGLSL=false . The games may also be using s3 texture compression, but I doubt it. (there is a way to turn it on through libtxc-dxtn)
A log would be useful nonetheless.

What intel card do you have?

--- Comment #4 from Pablo Marchant pamarca@gmail.com 2009-06-14 18:38:27 --- My video card is an integrated intel GM965 card.
Modifying the registry, now gives me an error when starting The Sims 3 (dont have a copy of Spore at hand so I cant check that one):
Starting the game is impossible. The 0 device cannot executed this title. Your graphic card seems to not take Shader Model version 2 or ulterior. Please update your card

--- Comment #5 from Pablo Marchant pamarca@gmail.com 2009-06-14 19:00:56 --- Sorry, GMA965 is actually the chipset of my card. The model is the GMA X3100 wich according to wikipedia supports shader model 4.0

--- Comment #9 from boat-bum@cinci.rr.com 2009-06-29 14:33:37 --- I have the same problem trying to play Sims 3 with the Intel 4500. My daughter bought Sims 3 and is deparately waiting to play it.
Even without the shader problem it blacks out the screen during the install of iTunes and double paints the Sims 3 installation dialog boxes. Is there something else I should test out also?

--- Comment #10 from Pablo Marchant pamarca@gmail.com 2009-07-01 12:34:04 --- I believe this bug is probably related to this other one in EVE online
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18074
There, graphics often fail to render, but menus appear. Also, boat-bum@cinci.rr.com if you are affected by this bug you should vote for it so it gets more attention.

--- Comment #12 from boat-bum@cinci.rr.com 2009-07-18 10:53:17 --- When I disable UseGLSL I get "System initialization failed (0x024e424f)".
The only place I see this listed is at hack sites but I have a legitimate copy of the game.
My daughter wants me to replace Linux with Windows, just so she can play the game.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. - thanks

--- Comment #13 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2010-07-23 15:49:53 --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for a year. Is this still an issue in current (1.2 or newer) wine

--- Comment #14 from Pablo Marchant pamarca@gmail.com 2010-07-23 16:12:44 --- Regrettably, i'm no longer in possesion of a computer with an intel graphics card in which to test this issue. Perhaps some of the other people who were affected by this could conduct the testing.

I'm experiencing this exact issue. Just to be clear about the mesa vs. Intel driver: The mesa driver is unbearably slow, but the screen is not black. The Intel (Tungsten) driver produces a black screen.

--- Comment #17 from evanh evanh@clear.net.nz 2010-07-31 10:48:30 --- And when it's just the driver lacking required OpenGL features it's not really a Wine issue, right?
Mesa, of course, is expected to be slow. I'm rather impressed it works.

Works is a relative term, especially when you get one frame like every minute. :)

--- Comment #19 from evanh evanh@clear.net.nz 2010-08-01 03:38:32 --- Mesa is truly emulating. Speed suffers.
As for what feature not in the Intel driver - shader function would be number one on that list. No shader, no picture, Eve has no fall-back any longer.
