Summary: D3D errors when trying to run Panzer General II. Problem has occured on all releases since ~0.8 Product: Wine Version: 1.1.20 Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: critical Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: homiad@alum.rpi.edu
Created an attachment (id=20931) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=20931) Console Output
Since installing 1.20 some new errors have cropped up, but the d3d errors still persist. Basically some people claim this game works out of the box while I have never been successful across different machines and using different installations.
The error I get is below:
fixme:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_FillGLCaps OpenGL implementation supports 32 vertex samplers and 32 total samplers fixme:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_FillGLCaps Expected vertex samplers + MAX_TEXTURES(=8) > combined_samplers fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x32f77c,0x00000000), stub! fixme:x11drv:X11DRV_desktop_SetCurrentMode Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to 8 fixme:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_Release (0x141d98) Device released with resources still bound, acceptable but unexpected fixme:d3d:dumpResources Leftover resource 0x14a148 with type 1,WINED3DRTYPE_SURFACE
I have also included a screen shot of what the game does. The background should be showing a hex map but instead it retains the image of the previous menu screen. Nothing will work to make the image go away.
I am running a stock installation of wine on Ubuntu Jaunty 64bit. I am not using any "enhancement" dll's and I do not have a Windows partition. Thank you.

--- Comment #3 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2009-05-06 10:04:12 --- Screen shot looks fine to me. Where is the problem? You ignore all the terminal messages - they are for debug only.

In the previous image attachment the is a bar in the bottom of the screen that says "Madrid Offensive". That part is OK. But if you look at the part above which has the text box "Herr General..." surrounded by the "Panzer General" logo and campaign selection. These images are left over from the previous screen. You should see a hex map similar to this attached image but it never comes up.
My cursor in the game will report the hex locations, that I can't see because the previous images have not be cleared, if I mouse around, but I cannot select anything.

--- Comment #6 from John Pietrzak john@pietrzak.org 2010-01-19 16:05:51 --- I had this problem running PG II under Wine, but was able to fix it by manually copying the "MAPS" directory from the CD into the panzer2 directory on the hard drive. (I'm not certain whether this means the install program failed, or there's a problem accessing the CD...)
Anyway, this might be something to try.

Ok, just set up 1.3.29 and tried again, and yes, same behavior as before.
However, I now believe the d3d "fixme" messages have nothing to do with the empty map screen problem. Once again, when I installed PGII, I got the d3d notes and empty map, but after copying over the MAP directory from the CD (as I noted in an earlier post), the game plays fine and I still see the same d3d messages.
I don't know if there's a problem with the installer not copying files over, or the game not finding the right path to the CD to find the map data, but it doesn't look like a d3d bug at this point.

still a bug in current wine?
I think this bug is more related to the driver of the graphic-card(s), MESA, OpenGL, Rendr/Randr or SDL installation/configuration.
I have the same-kind of bug, but it does keep saying that there is a problem with the Display devices..

--- Comment #11 from EAZ @ Gamix OS HQ dezeeuw1986@gmail.com --- FIXED!!!
First you need winetricks-dev edition:
rm -f winetricks wget http://winetricks.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/src/winetricks chmod +x winetricks
Then install SDL in wine:
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/home/`USERNAME'/.local/bottles/panzer sh winetricks sdl Executing w_do_call sdl Executing load_sdl Executing mkdir -p /home/`USERNAME'/.cache/winetricks/sdl Downloading http://www.libsdl.org/release/SDL-1.2.14-win32.zip to /home/`USERNAME'/.cache/winetricks/sdl Initializing download: http://www.libsdl.org/release/SDL-1.2.14-win32.zip File size: 148795 bytes Opening output file SDL-1.2.14-win32.zip Starting download

Now you can run Panzer General 2:
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/home/`USERNAME'/.local/bottles/panzer wine C:\Program\ Files\Panzer\ General\ 2\PANZER2.EXE

--- Comment #13 from Béla Gyebrószki gyebro69@gmail.com --- Is this still an issue in Wine 1.7.36 or newer?
I have the GOG.com version so the problem described in comment #6 and comment #8 is out of the question. On my system the game hits bug #35718 with the default orm=fbo setting, causing various graphical issues. When orm=backbuffer is used the map and the user interface are displayed properly. The only problem I have is that the game is extremely fast due to bug #28520.

--- Comment #16 from John Pietrzak john@pietrzak.org --- Before abandoning this bug, can I once again mention that this bug has been improperly described? Yes, this game does not work "out of the box" for some people when installed. Yes, this game generates D3D error messages. But no, these two items are not linked.
When installing from a CD, the "MAP" directory is not getting copied over appropriately. If you manually copy the MAP directory, the problem goes away, and the game plays as normal.

Whoops, sorry, I missed comment #13. Still, I believe that the original bug and the one mentioned in that comment are likely due to different causes...
I'll be quiet now. :)

There MUST be only one problem per bug report. You should rename the title of this bug as "Some files are not copied from CD for Panzer General II"
I could do so if you like. However, the person who created this bug (dan) never responded to my comments. The people who later commented about the bug (10, 11, and 13) seemed to indicate that they were having a problem that was not fixed by my suggestion.
Therefore, I have no real confirmation whether (a) my fix was a good workaround for the original bug or (b) whether anyone even agreed that I understood the problem was in the first place (assuming that they were even facing the same problem). :(
