Summary: Chessmaster 9000 graphics problems in wined3d Product: Wine Version: 0.9.51. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: wine-directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: julianlubenov@abv.bg
The problem is that the "chessmaster 9000" game can't display most of it's graphics. When you enter to the game room or class room no 3d graphics are displayed because of problem in the IWineD3DSwapChainImpl_Present function. The messages in the console are:
fixme:d3d:IWineD3DSwapChainImpl_Present Unhandled present options 0x5afe90/0x5afe90 err:d3d:IWineD3DSwapChainImpl_Present Cannot change the destination window of the owner of the primary context
The err message is critical. Because the destination window of the primary context can't be changed no graphics are displayed in the destination window.
The fixme message is problem too because if the error with the destination window is corrected the graphics probably won't be displayed correctly.

--- Comment #1 from Diego Jacobi jacobidiego@gmail.com 2008-03-01 09:11:39 --- I confirm for Chessmaster 9000 on wine 0.9.55. This is garbage and there is no good linux equivalent. This is the best tool for chess master profesionals and hobbyists.
It opens with some graphics defects and then those are auto fixed. It shows correctly a Login window with the puzzle of the day which does work. After Login it does shows the main window but then almost nothing work. I have updated the appDB entry for this game.
If it doesn't crash, the 3D Chessboard is not shown but the UI is so breaked that it is impossible to change to a 2D chessboard like in the puzzle of the day.
I couldn't attach the logs becouse it is bigger than 1 Mb, so i uploaded it to a personal account on a public website.

--- Comment #4 from Julian Lubenov julianlubenov@abv.bg 2008-03-04 07:41:29 --- The problem is the IWineD3DSwapChainImpl_Present function I am sure. It is in the source in the /wine_source/dlls/wined3d/swapchain.c file. I even wrote one ugly hack for the problem with the changing of the destination window and it displayed some graphics but pushed upper at the screen because of the other problem (the "fixme").

However, I'm not sure if it is prudent to attach a bug for Chessmaster 9000 to the AppDB entry for Chessmaster 10th Edition...???

--- Comment #13 from Diego Jacobi jacobidiego@gmail.com 2009-07-08 18:49:50 --- Sry for saying this, but yes.
This is one of the most breaked games on wine.
Retested with wine-1.1.24-421-ga3dbe3c
Widgets like toogle buttons doesnt answer and one can not change to 2D chessboard.
Choosing Gameroom crashes the game inmediatelly.
Choosing other options may not crash, but or not pieces are seen or no chessboard and you can not move any piece, even knowing where they should be.

"Puzzle of the day" sometimes dont works.
The mouse is always behind the widget. And sometimes the puzzle is somehow not initialiced. I see a normal chess board with all the piece waiting for a normal start, but the widget still waits for the solution, and solution given is not racional.
Clic on "Gameroom" crashes instantly the game.
"Rated game" crashes
The 3D pieces are now seen but no board and no interaction. Is not possible to play. Widgets doesnt respond as they should.
2D board is shown with no pieces

--- Comment #16 from DenTaKu dentaku@web.de 2010-12-18 15:10:41 CST --- Just bought the GOG.com Version of Chessmaster 9000 (1.0.2a). Same problem on my Ubuntu 10.10 (64 Bit) with Wine 1.3.9. The game starts, the main menu is okay. Choosing "CM LIve" crashes the game. All other don't crash. Database room works. All others don't show anything in the main window - just blackness. Menu and button panel on the left side works. When I minimize the main window and resize it again, suddenly some windows are visible in the main window - but nothing more. You can't play, because you don't see anything: no board, no figures, ... :-(

--- Comment #17 from ballkontrol@gmail.com 2010-12-28 15:13:06 CST --- Installed Chessmaster 9000 v1.02a on my PC running the latest Slackware distro (Slackware-current) with KDE4.6 RC1 (got similar results when i switched to fluxbox and XFCE)
The game does not run out of the box but takes some trial and error. Try the following tweaks the first time you launch it: -Default 3D board remains invisible (can't see the squares or the pieces). Pick another board that renders correctly: -Preferences --> Chess Sets --> uncheck "Match Boards and Pieces" -pick a 3D board (Brass and Chrome worked for me) -pick "Black and White Figurine" under the Flat category (worked for me) -need to repeat steps above in gameroom, libraryroom etc -once configured, game runs slowly, a move may take 5 to 12 seconds to render, haven't tried it on a different PC yet.
-Graphics issues with rendering and redraw, interface hangs at times. To resolve, switch to database or library room then back to gameroom. Disable Mentor and Thinking lines windows, which make the game unresponsive)
-Under Preferences --> Board Settings --> check "Two Click Moves"
-Database and classic games library worked well enough to step through grandmaster games.
-Classroom starts up but asks for CD
-Couldn't find a way to make option buttons work.
-Sliding piece behavior on the board makes the game run even slower, and couldn't be disabled due to option buttons on the user interface not responding at all (checkboxes work though).

--- Comment #18 from DenTaKu dentaku@web.de 2010-12-28 15:55:32 CST --- (In reply to comment #17) All your hints didn't helped for me. But I encountered, that the main window covers all the smaller windows! I thought they just flash visible just to vanish like the main window content. But they are hidden behind the main window! Strange thing is that basically all those other windows shows the content - even the "Visual Thinking" window shows board and pieces. But the main (biggest) window alsmost never shows any board or pieces. I just get it to show a board in the Tutorial mode- but just for 1 question.
When I resize the main window, the content shows strange colors and artefacts. I have even seen some pieces of my desktop background picture in it (even though I start wine with a virtual desktop)!

Can you try running winetest on that system (see http://wiki.winehq.org/ConformanceTests )? It'd be interesting to hear whether wine's d3d tests pass there.

well, when no one bothers to answer for a long time one might assume:
- the bug is fixed - the reporter is not interested anymore - app/game is not available anymore ...
Keeping bugs open forever with no response is not useful. The last answer was roughly 3 years ago.
There are many hundreds, possibly thousand(s) bugs in Bugzilla that 'bit rot' due to laziness hence the regular purge sweeps.
