Black screen hangs and I have to kill the process to get my Desktop back. I only see the error message about access violation when I switch Wine to Emulate Desktop.
I get it with a PC-GURU magazine, without protection. (On Win it starts without the disc) Maybe the original doesn't have this issue.

--- Comment #15 from Alessandro Pezzoni alessandro_pezzoni@lavabit.com 2011-12-18 14:31:44 CST --- This seems to be a video playback issue. After renaming the Scrapland/Video folder the game runs fine. That folder contains some avi cutscenes and some intro videos (with .vds extension).
Moreover, this bug affects some Windows versions too (see e.g. [1]). I tried setting various Windows versions in wine (namely XP, 2000, 98, NT 4.0), but that didn't help. On Windows ffdshow seem to be interfering with the in-game video player [2], but I don't know if this can be helpful.
