Summary: TF2 and Portal do not render correctly with nvidia- drivers-169.x and above Product: Wine Version: 0.9.57. Platform: PC-x86-64 URL: http://www.steampowered.com/ OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: l_bratch@yahoo.co.uk
Created an attachment (id=11263) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=11263) Image showing menu
Nvidia drivers 100.x work correctly with these games, however 169.x and 171.x do not. Attached are some screenshots showing the problems (no background menu image, fonts not correct in the server list, and black boxes where HUD items should be).

--- Comment #2 from Rico kgbricola@web.de 2008-03-09 09:03:08 --- Could you have a look here http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11911 and see if it is the same problem? Could you try this demo http://www.4players.de/4players.php/download_start/Allgemein/Download/3625.h... if it has the same behavior?

--- Comment #3 from Luke Bratch l_bratch@yahoo.co.uk 2008-03-09 09:18:33 --- I'll download that to have a test, but to find out of it's the same problem, you should test your game with nvidia drivers 100.x, and 169.x and see if the problem exists in both.
About this bug - talking in IRC it seems like this might be an Nvidia driver bug.

--- Comment #4 from Rico kgbricola@web.de 2008-03-09 10:17:59 --- I've tested the game demo (SoF2) with 100.x and it worked without trouble.
PS: It's not my bug ;-) I just saw your picture http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=11263 and the one from the other http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=11211 . So I think they have the same bug source.

I have this same issue. I'm presuming it applies to all Source games... I've seen it in Portal, TF2, and HL2Ep2. It only happens at -dxlevel 90, 81 works fine. I'm running nVidia driver from 169.12 on an 8800 GT. I can confirm that I did *not* see this bug with nVidia driver version 169.09 on my old 6800 GS; unfortunately I changed both the card and the driver at about the same time so I don't know for sure which triggered the problem, but I'm guessing it's the card. I've attached the debug log from launching Portal at -dxlevel 90. I don't recall seeing the messages about "vertex samplers + MAX_TEXTURES(=8) > combined_samplers" before with the old card, but I don't know if it's related.

They appear with the 100.x drivers, which do work fine, so presumably that is unrelated.

Running under wine-0.9.60,
Also Crosshairs seem to be the only UI element that is rendered as a black box, there is also a texturing issue here which is probably unrelated.

I just tested out the latest beta nvidia-drivers (173.08)
Rather than rendering these UI elements as black boxes, they are simply transparent, or ignored. Where the server list with nvidia-drivers 169.12 was filled with black boxes, it _appears_ to be blank here, but is not.
All UI elements in portal that were black boxes are not showing up either.
interestingly in the releae notes for these nvidia drivers beta(http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_173.08.html)
"Fixed OpenGL rendering corruption with textures compressed using the DXT5 compression algorithm."
I took a look at the portal_crosshairs texture using (from the command console in portal): mat_texture_list 1
It does use DXT5.

--- Comment #14 from Arkadiusz Piekarz piekarzarkadiusz@gmail.com 2008-08-30 08:44:35 --- Confirming - bug still present in Wine 1.1.3, Ubuntu 8.04.1, Metacity, Geforce 8800 GT, nvidia drivers 173.14.12. The HUD is not drawn and the menu background is black. The list of servers is invisible. I played on DirectX 9.

--- Comment #16 from Arkadiusz Piekarz piekarzarkadiusz@gmail.com 2008-10-08 16:05:50 --- Great news!
I don't know whether it's the newest Wine from git (wine-1.1.5-579-g19d18f0) or the newest Nvidia drivers (177.80), but thanks to one of them Team Fortress 2 now works correctly in DirectX 9 mode! The menu is displayed correctly, the HUD is finally drawn, there's no black screen with deathcam.
Of course the performance is still worse than on WinXP, but that's totally different matter. We can play now TF2 with better graphics :-)
