When someone has typed a-z, A-Z, 0-9 or other characters like ".:,;(*!?^_-" in the Japanese chat using Microsoft IME (or any other IME), EVE Online fails to find the correct font, and thous renders squares. The real outcome should be Roman characters using a Japanese font.
So far, I've tried to copy the whole font directory from a Windows 7 install, but EVE still fails to find the correct font. I also did a test in Guild Wars (which doesn't use the font folder like EVE does), and it managed to display Roman characters without fail, so this is a app-specific problem.
This bug can easily be reproduced, simply type numbers or special characters while SCIM-Anthy is active, and Japanese is set as the active language.

This reminds me of a bug I haven't reported yet for Guild Wars, whereas the Workstation cuts all fonts at the top, IF Japanese is selected as the main language. Yet again, the Laptop does not have the same problem.
I'll do the same checks on EVE, which I did on Guild Wars (clean ~/.wine, reinstall wine, reinstall OS, etc), just to make sure it isn't a configuration problem.

If EVE is ran for the first time, with msgothic.ttc in the font folder, EVE maps the font correctly. But if msgothic.ttc is missing, and its added later on (as most people do with the EVE EULA bug http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18221 ), the font won't be mapped correctly.
In order to make EVE map msgothic.ttc correctly, the file "pc.dat" under "~/.wine/drive_c/users/<user>/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE/c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility/settings/" needs to be deleted, this resets the EVE client and EVE correctly maps msgothic.ttc.
So unless someone wishes to dig further into this, I suggest closing it and mark it as invalid.
