Summary: SolidWorks 2008: Installation fails Product: Wine Version: 1.1.31 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: msi AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: lukasz.wojnilowicz@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=24138) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=24138) wine-1.1.31 with dotnet installed through winetricks
I'm using Fedora 11 32 bit with Wine 1.1.31
The installation of SolidWorks 2008 fails with msiexec error. Last installer step was something like adding Windows registry keys.
The application needs .NET Framework 3.0. If i install it through winetricks then whole wineprefix is 2.9 GB big after installation error. If I use clean wineprefix then whole wineprefix is 2.4 GB big after installation error.

You reported how many bugs and still don't know:
- NOT TO PASTE LOGS
- Always install Wine debug symbols when attaching any backtraces!
What's this all about? For what are your usual exclamation marks and CAPSes? Yes a long trace is pasted, so what? who really cares? Backtrace without symbols - just remember to attach another one, it's simple. Don't want to bother - don't. Just closing bugs isn't helpful at all.
Closing invalid. If you won't follow bug submission requirements, don't bother opening new bugs
It's a user driven project and not something to be done to your taste. If user reports a problem it only means he uses Wine - isn't it enough to ask him about needed information not to stop him reporting (it doesn't matter is it first report or not).
P.S. It isn't about this report only, I think you've got it.
2Lukasz: Vitaliy is right but not in a presentation. Please attach a full trace with symbols and try to follow bug reporting rules.

Sorry I didn't do that intentionally. In fact I misunderstood one option which was here on Bugzilla. I don't remember that I posted so long backtraces earlier. Sorry if I drove you crazy.
Closing invalid. If you won't follow bug submission requirements, don't bother opening new bugs
So if the bug would be closed as you did then what should I do next: 1) open new bug with the same issue 2) reopen this bug 3) leave this issue This is stupid. You could politely say what is wrong with my submission and have understanding that I know just little about programming.
Anyhow I'm posting new backtrace and addtional info gcc (GCC) 4.4.1 20090725 (Red Hat 4.4.1-2) Windows version set to XP because on Vista it crashes early on computing available disk space

--- Comment #7 from Ken Sharp kennybobs@o2.co.uk 2009-10-17 09:55:18 --- What locale are you using?
Is the backtrace the same for 2009?
Plus, is there a demo available for download?

Windows version set to XP because on Vista it crashes early on computing available disk space
That should be raised as another (minor) bug.

I don't know if it's exactly the same but installing 2009 version I also saw =>0 0x6835a208 ITERATE_WriteEnvironmentString+0x208 and installer also failed on adding windows registry keys. The size of installation was almost the same. Both versions require the same components to be installed before.
Plus, is there a demo available for download?
No there is no demo available. You either buy it, receive it as a student or steal it.

I'll do that soon.

I too have experienced this. I ran it on Mac OS X. First the install runs normally. Then it gets to the part where it writes to the environment. Then it crashes. I've attached a log (with debug symbols) showing what happens.
I really need this for school, so I'd like to see this bug fixed.

--- Comment #11 from Charles Davis cdavis@mines.edu 2009-11-10 16:15:37 --- I would, but it's too big. (It's 88 MB.) Compressed with bzip2, it's still too big (2.3 MB).
Funny. I get different results with +msi. Instead of crashing trying to write environment strings, it aborts installation trying to write shortcuts. MSI crashes soon afterward (it's in the log).

--- Comment #12 from Hans Leidekker hans@meelstraat.net 2009-11-11 02:17:15 --- Charles, you claim your log has debug symbols but it doesn't. Please generate a WINEDEBUG=+msi,+relay,+seh,+tid log and attach the last 100000 lines, including the backtrace.

With +relay added to WINEDEBUG, log is 7GB+ big and setup stays in initialization, so I broke early.
I thin installation crashes in the place I mentioned in first comment. Attached log has 100000 lines from the end of full log

Charles, you claim your log has debug symbols but it doesn't. Please
IIRC debug symbols are somewhat broken on OS X, and you need to disable optimization to make them work properly (i.e. compile with "-g -O0").

Indeed it fixes it. There is new regsvr32 error at "Publishing product information" step, but SW2008 installer reports that all went successful.
Great thing is that SW2008 (SW 2009 probably too) starts. Thanks for that and I hope this patch will find it way into the git.
