Summary: Wipeout XL hangs at startup Product: Wine Version: CVS/GIT Platform: Other URL: http://www.3dgamers.com/dlselect/games/wipeoutxl/wipeout xl.zip.html OS/Version: other Status: NEW Keywords: download Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: winmm&mci AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: dank@kegel.com
In http://jmikeneedham.dyndns.org/?p=10, a user complained that Psygnosis Wipeout XL hangs on startup. I confirmed this with the downloadable demo, http://www.3dgamers.com/dlselect/games/wipeoutxl/wipeoutxl.zip.html Name wipeoutxl.zip Size 6153701 sha1sum 5e420f8e79ac63e1e3bb76692dbfb0ae1caf1161
Looking at the log, it seems to be looping endlessly looking for an audio CD to be inserted. This was common practice back in the day; gamers would always throw an audio CD-ROM in the drive so they could listen to music while they played. Games often came on hybrid audio/data cds. When you insert a hybrid audio/data cd, though, you have to tell the system to mount the data portion, else wine won't give it a drive letter.
So, if you jump through those hoops (e.g. insert a cd-rom and tell the system to mount it), the game will continue to the next problem: you can tell the game to start, and the welcome screen then goes away, but no game window comes up. The log shows:
fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x34f820,0x00000000), stub! fixme:xrandr:X11DRV_XRandR_SetCurrentMode Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to 8 err:xrandr:X11DRV_XRandR_SetCurrentMode Resolution change not successful -- perhaps display has changed?
So I guess the next step is to try this on an 8 bit display.

--- Comment #1 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2008-03-11 10:49:52 --- On both 8 and 16 bit displays (instead of the 24 I had been using), the game then crashes with Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x000000fc in 32-bit code (0x000000fc).
+relay shows that it's using OutputDebugString to log its progress starting up, but nothing is obviously wrong.
There is one odd thing: the game's start screen has a pulldown list of supported resolutions, and it's empty. That seems wrong, and might possibly be related to the later crash.

There is one odd thing: the game's start screen has a pulldown list of supported resolutions, and it's empty. That seems wrong, and might possibly be related to the later crash.
I have that same issue. If I enable "Emulate a virtual Desktop" in wine, the pulldown menu gives me the valid resolutions (all the way up to 1024x768).
But when I try to run the game, I get the following:
ALSA lib seq_hw.c:457:(snd_seq_hw_open) open /dev/snd/seq failed: No such file or directory fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x33f840,0x00000000), stub! wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x000000fc at address 0xfc (thread 0009), starting debugger... Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x000000fc in 32-bit code (0x000000fc).
For the full error and backtrace, see attachment.
System is Gentoo Linux, 2.6.23 (AMD 64 X2 4200+, running in 32bit). Wine version is the latest pull from git as of today (4th May). I had to alter my xorg-conf to use 16bit color, otherwise I get the "Cannot change screen BPP..." error when running the game.

--- Comment #4 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-12-08 21:01:01 --- Old link is busted. Crashes on startup for me (doesn't seem to look for a cd, but I didn't check +relay/file). Didn't try 8 bit mode either.

--- Comment #5 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2009-01-18 03:48:08 --- Removing deprecated CVS/GIT version tag. Please retest in current git. If the bug is still present in today's wine, but was not present in some earlier version of wine, please update version field to earliest known version of wine that had the bug. Thanks!

--- Comment #9 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- I don't get a splash screen, but I don't have an audio cd mounted (no cd drive on this laptop).
Mounting the ISO and symlinking the loopback device to the drive letter doesn't help.
Note: requires win95 mode in winecfg.
