Bug #: 33022 Summary: Starship Titanic hanging on video replay Product: Wine Version: 1.5.6 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: norbert@preining.info Classification: Unclassified
Hi everyone,
I have recently installed Starship Titanic, updated it to the latest version 40c and tried to run it with both wine 1.4.1 and 1.5.6 on Debian/unstable x86_64 linux.
In both cases I suspect that some video playback is the problem, reasons for this are: - when entering the CD into the drive, on the screen of the computer in the game a short sequence of the logo of the game should appear. But here the game continues without problem. - when entering into the elevator, a black box appears in the middle of the screen, here should be the bot speaking to me. The outer border of the game screen is present, but the box in the middle remains black.
Unfortunately at the second stage the game hangs, due to the fact that one has to interact with the elevator.
The last lines of the terminal output before Ctrl-C ing out are err:iccvid:decode_cinepak CVID: corruption 0 (QT/AVI) != 5767508 (CV) err:iccvid:decode_cinepak CVID: strip overflow (more than 32) (many of these).
Concerning cinepak: It is known that newer libraries of the cinepak dll do not work with the game. From the web site of the game (FAQ), which is luckily still online: Yes! Or rather, yes, it works until you install Service Pack 2, which upgrades the Cinepak® Codec to a special non-working version.
The solution is to download Cinepak version 1.10.0.11
So it might be that the bug is related to too new cinepak libraries.
On my VirtualBox WinXP machine I got it running without problems, but I had to install the correct version of the cinepak dll into the ST directory.
This I also did on the wine game, without success.
I have also run the game with wine 1.4.1 WINEDEBUG=+relay,+seh,+tid, but that created a 1.6G (!) file of output, so no way that I can share that.
Any other information I could provide?
Thanks
Norbert

--- Comment #2 from Norbert Preining norbert@preining.info 2013-02-20 19:16:02 CST --- Hi Bruno,
hmm, that didn't work toooo well. I have compiled new Debian packages based on the 1.5.24 sources, and now nothing works anymore, not even starting...
Starting ST now gives a window with "Unexpected error", and the console output is: fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x32f448,0x00000000), stub! (then 16 times) fixme:avifile:AVIFileExit (): stub! ALSA lib conf.c:3314:(snd_config_hooks_call) Cannot open shared library libasound_module_conf_pulse.so ALSA lib pcm.c:2217:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default fixme:d3d:wined3d_device_decref Device released with resources still bound, acceptable but unexpected. fixme:d3d:wined3d_device_decref Leftover resource 0xd70398 with type WINED3D_RTYPE_SURFACE (0x1).
Seems that suddenly the alsa sound system does not work anymore, but libwine-alsa-unstable:i386 is installed.
Going into winecfg and selecting the default sound card allowed me to play a test sound, so that is not the problem.
Well, I will investigate further on...
Norbert

--- Comment #5 from Norbert Preining norbert@preining.info --- Hi everyone,
long time no feedback, sorry. I have now retested with Debian sid's wine-development which is 1.7.51 and see several issues:
* sound stops half-way through the init sequence (2 times)
* video in the elevator does not start, black frame, hang
I tried to play with WINEDEBUG set (as above) and without, in winedbg environment and in normal wine env, in all cases something hangs.

--- Comment #7 from Norbert Preining norbert@preining.info --- Created attachment 52562 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=52562 log when running with +avifile,+iccvid,+msvideo
The moment one enters into the elevator a black square appears, the st.exe proces runs 70% of the CPU, wineserver anouther 40%, and nothing happens.
One more comment: I have set st.exe to compatibility with Win98 in winecfg
Thanks

--- Comment #8 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com --- Thanks for the log, I can confirm the issue. As you describe there are at least 2 different problems, the video not appearing in the computer is a video index parsing problem but the second one I have no idea for now.

--- Comment #9 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com --- The computer and TV movies will now play properly in wine-git, for the other hang I don't know what it is about. It doesn't seem to be video related because the application just sits in PeekMessage forever waiting for something...
The first black box that appears when the bot comes down the stairs happens when Indeo 4 is not installed.

--- Comment #10 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com --- I can no longer reproduce this in wine 1.9.5. Please retest when possible.
