Summary: Direct3D mode in Age of Wonders 2 demo is unusably slow and glitchy Product: Wine Version: 0.9.50. Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: wine-directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: sharparrow1@yahoo.com
(Demo available at http://www.triumphstudios.com/ageofwonders2/files.html; it installs quite painlessly.)
Note that Direct3D mode is the default for this game, but can be turned off through the included configuration app aow2Setup.exe. However, when Direct3D mode is not enabled, some graphical effects are disabled.
Multiple issues with Direct3D mode in Age of Wonders 2 demo; I'm not really sure how related these are, but I'll put them together, I guess, since I'm not sure separate bugs would be useful without any real idea of what is causing these effects:
1. In-game repainting speed is unusably slow. (To get in-game quickly, press the "Tutorial" button.)
2. There are graphical glitches in-game: for one very obvious example, use the scroll wheel to change the zoom level, and all the UI on the bottom gets painted over.
3. The "buy now" screen (accessible by clicking "Quit" on the main menu) flickers severely.
I'm using Wine 0.9.50 on Ubuntu 7.10; I have an Intel Core Duo and and ATI Mobility X1400, and I'm using the version of fglrx that comes with Ubuntu.

--- Comment #1 from Christopher Lindemann christopher.lindemann@gmail.com 2008-10-25 14:11:56 --- I can confirm that there are still Direct3D mode problems in Age of Wonders Shadow magic in wine v.1.1.7. All UI portions of the screen flicker during gameplay.

--- Comment #2 from Luke Benstead kazade@gmail.com 2009-07-20 12:28:24 --- I've just tested this under 1.1.26.
The menu screen loads apparently faultlessly but the game never seems to take focus. I can't move the menu's cursor, or use the keyboard to navigate the menu items, no input seems to be received at all.

That's Bug 10016 (which oddly, has starting affecting my setup, which it didn't before). As a workaround, you can open some other program, like Wine Notepad, with Wine first (and keep it open), run the following command, then launch the game: ps -C wineserver -o pid= | xargs renice 19 --pid
Update on this bug: the flickering issues seem to have gotten worse; there's now flickering in-game as well as on the "buy now" screen. The game is also still unplayably slow.

--- Comment #6 from Athrun samurai_no_densetsu@yahoo.es 2012-03-26 19:44:16 CDT --- Tested both full version ofthis game and the demo located at fileplanet.com, Direct3D is no longer an issue in this game with wine 1.5.0. I only get a few of 'fixme:d3d:resource_check_usage Unhandled usage flags 0x8.' and no more than 20 or 30. Relating to speed, D3D mode matches DirectDraw (but Wine's Directdraw can be speedier at high resolutions). Anyway no longer an issue.

--- Comment #7 from Xavier Vachon xvachon@gmail.com 2013-04-25 02:01:25 CDT --- Tested the GOG.com version of the game with the latest wine (1.5.28) on Arch x64. With Direct3D on, the game runs well, but the mouse is uncontrollable (http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32930). Until the mouse is smoother, it will be difficult to test this better.

--- Comment #10 from Jarkko K jarkko_korpi@hotmail.com --- I was doing regression test while I figured out that something is wrong that I got black screen on every build...well we found out that you need to play the game as windowed mode (you can select this from game's setup before launching game).
I am speaking about the demo version now, don't have the full game.
Testing wine-1.7.16-34-g2fbbe14 now (from git)
If I set virtual desktop 1920x1080 (native resolution) and game running other than window mode, I get a crash.
fixme:x11drv:X11DRV_desktop_SetCurrentMode Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to 16
If I set resolution in game something other than window mode I get black screen(without emulate desktop).
If I set window mode in game settings and try to maximize it, mouse cursor gets slow and game doesn't scale full screen.
If I run my native resolution and game in window mode, I don't see slowness in menu animation or cursor.
I tried to zoom with mousewheel while in tutorial. Doesn't work. It only says zoom level 100%.
I don't see drawing issues, but the game is quite small at my 1920x1080 when run window mode.
Could someone else test too? I might have written something wrong, bit tired. I didn't test all resolution modes.

The same version here on my laptop, but with intel/mesa, and full screen renders. My WM panel shows over the game though (I'll attach a screenshot and terminal output, fwiw).
