Summary: Eve Online Randomly Crashes with unhandled page fault on read access. Product: Wine Version: 1.3.19 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: wweiland@starnova.org
Created an attachment (id=34636) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=34636) Backtrace 051111
I've been dealing with this problem for months now. I can log into Eve Online fine, but after a random amount of time (seconds or minutes) the program will just crashed. I can be in station or in space. There can be ships around or nothing. I can leave my window in the foreground or put it in the background. It will crash regardless. I have updated my nvidia video drivers to the latest version off their website as well as use the native Ubuntu drivers. I'm currently running Ubuntu 11.04 but have experienced this problem in 10.10. I have attached the backtrace. Please let me know what other information is needed.
Intel Xeon W3550 nVidia Corporation G98 [Quadro NVS 420]

=>0 0xf61cf020 in libnvidia-glcore.so.270.41.06 (+0xe67020) (0x7d7f1830)
The crash is in the nvidia drivers.

--- Comment #2 from Todd wweiland@starnova.org 2011-05-11 12:44:22 CDT --- I would think many are using these drivers. I've had these problems across multiple revisions of this driver, wine, and EVE. Is there some type of logging that will give me more information?

--- Comment #3 from sgt_b2002@yahoo.com 2011-05-18 13:47:25 CDT --- I believe I may be experiencing a similar issue. I have random crashes in EVE as well after a relatively short duration of run time. Versions are similar to OP as well.
`wine eve.exe` will run for a few minutes before crashing while `wine explorer /desktop=EVE_1,1600x900 .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe` will run for longer before crashing. In either case the backtrace is the same.
Running Gentoo amd64 (2.6.38) Wine 1.3.19 EVE Client 6.43 Nvidia 270.41.06 gcc 4.5.2 glibc 2.13 emul-linux-x86-* installed
I understand that libnvidia-glcore.so.270.41.06 would indicate a problem with the driver, but the appdb entry for EVE indicates that this version of the driver was used in testing. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=22575

i started eve in terminal with the command:
wine explorer /desktop=Bruce_Blacky,1280x960 "C:\Program Files\CCP\Bruce\eve.exe"
crashes seems to occure when i have more than one client started and or doing also other stuff on PC (like spreadsheets openoffice)
my guess is that it is related to nvidia drivers...
i use ubuntu 11.04 with wine 1.3.19 ands nvidia 270.41.06

--- Comment #7 from sgt_b2002@yahoo.com 2011-05-19 16:13:31 CDT --- Well, I just got another crash, but this time the backtrace referenced libc, mpg123, and some others. Not sure if this is related to the OP issue or not.

Disregard, my gentoo system still has a buggy libmpg123.

--- Comment #10 from Petr Shatunov petrosha@list.ru 2011-08-06 03:20:15 CDT --- Same here. Ubuntu 11.04, Nvidia gf8400m binary driver - 270.41.06-0 ubuntu The Eve client crashes with:
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000bb0 at address 0x6ae28008 (thread 0023)
The address is always different. The easiest way to achieve this is to switch out from the client to some other app and then back several time. Seems to be that it happens only when the game is fully loaded - does not happen at the login screen or at the character creation page. After the Error the client freezes and wine start the debugger but it never goes any further. Just show "sturting the debugger" untill I kill the process...

--- Comment #11 from Petr Shatunov petrosha@list.ru 2011-08-06 05:17:40 CDT --- Suddenly I have found something that can be considered as a solution. I have tried to launch EVE in the separate X session... It worked good. Then I have tried to use TWM to switch from EVE to EFT. And there were no crashes! Then I have installed the XFCE session for my ubuntu and there are no crashes too in it! I can switch back and forward through different apps and then back to EVE.
It seems to be that at least in my case the problem is GNOME specific...

--- Comment #13 from evanh evanh@clear.net.nz 2011-09-17 09:18:44 CDT --- Multiple problems listed in this bug:
- Todd, Petr: You need to use a virtual desktop, eg: wine explorer /desktop=EVE1,1280x960 "C:\Program Files\CCP\Bruce\eve.exe" Well documented as bug 15485
- sgt_b2002: Delete jukebox or update to latest mpg123 library. There is instruction for updating in the AppDB. This is not a Wine bug.
- Bruce_Blacky: Dunno for your problem.

No. It is not the same bug. I am using this hack with /desktop=EVE... for several years already. It works perfectly with xfwm4 but fails from time to time with metacity. So, please don't close it.

--- Comment #16 from evanh evanh@clear.net.nz 2011-09-19 11:04:25 CDT --- Cool. You might want to check in on bug 27291 as it appears similar.
Actually, I wouldn't be too surprised if all these bugs are just variations and the virtual desktop workaround is just masking the problem under certain circumstances.
