Summary: Painkiller level E4M3 "Babel" hangs on load Product: Wine Version: 1.1.17 Platform: Other OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: aoanla@yahoo.com
For unknown reasons, when attempting to start the level "Babel" in Painkiller (Steam edition) in Wine, the game hangs roughly 50% of the way into loading the level. The program can be killed by switching to a virtual console and killing the process - this does not affect the Steam process, and results in an apparently clean exit.
There is no debug output from Wine at any point around the time of the hang.
Bug occurs with NVIDIA drivers 177.80 and 180.37 Bug occurs with both fbo and backbuffer offscreen rendering.
Bug occurs with Wine 1.1.17. No other wine version tested yet
All previous levels load perfectly in 1.1.17.

--- Comment #1 from Anirudh prototype.angel+nospam@gmail.com 2009-03-15 08:17:08 --- I have been having the very same problem. All the other levels load perfectly, just this one seems to stop loading - It's very odd.
happens at all levels of graphics settings.
I have the nvidia 180 driver.

--- Comment #2 from Sam skipsey aoanla@yahoo.com 2009-03-15 10:24:32 --- Appears to be an issue known to people posting on the Cedega wiki:
http://cedegawiki.sweetleafstudios.com/wiki/Painkiller
so the problem is almost certainly common to Cedega and "proper" Wine.
The solutions suggested there are: download savegames from a link they provide on the wiki to bypass that level, or wait "15 minutes" for the level to load (apparently this isn't actually a hang, it just takes an order of magnitude more time to load this level than any other level in the game).

--- Comment #3 from lukian@gmail.com 2009-07-09 14:39:03 --- I can confirm this bug. The loading time is 7-8 minutes.
CPU: AMD Althon X2 4400+ (2.3GHz). RAM: 4GB DDR2-667MHz. HDD: 500GB 7200rpm Seagate HDD.
This bug may be present under windows also - will confirm at later date.

--- Comment #4 from lukian@gmail.com 2009-07-10 22:38:41 --- Created an attachment (id=22319) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=22319) Save game file
Tested this bug as *not* existing under Windows (XP).
Furthermore, the game locks up when defeating the "Large executioner" atop the platform, when the platform impacts with the floor it's meant to break through.
I've attached a savegame file (one quicksave, one normal save) at this point, killing the mob should demonstrate the crash (and loading the game should take 7mins+ if this is a global bug).
Wine version: 1.1.24 & 1.1.25 nvidia-glx version: 185.18.10 & 185.18.14 OS: Ubuntu 8.04 amd64 2.6.28-13-generic Game version: "Gold Edition" 1.64 (available on steam or patchable from any older retail copy)

--- Comment #5 from Mark Skinner marks@cinfinity.info 2009-09-03 05:05:27 --- When I played the Babel map in Nightmare mode, I also encountered long delays (05:36 on my Athlon64), but the Executioner sequence worked fine, and the load delays disappeared when loading games saved around that point. However, when I played the game in Trauma mode, I encountered delays on loading from all autosaves, and after killing the Executioner.
The game never actually crashed, it just had something to do for a while! My guess is that it's a bug in Painkiller itself, but one that Windows doesn't expose - probably caused by some kind of game resource management.
I use a custom Linux system (compiled entirely from source) and Wine version 1.1.21.

--- Comment #6 from Georgy Yunaev gyunaev@ulduzsoft.com 2009-12-15 23:27:12 --- I can confirm this bug is still reproduced with wine 1.1.34, both for Babel level start, and end (Executioner sequence).
There is another bug in "Painkiller - Battle out of Hell", level Dead City, which has exactly the same behavior - level hangs during loading for 5-7 minutes, and then continues.
I can provide the game if necessary, I have an extra copy.

--- Comment #7 from Georgy Yunaev gyunaev@ulduzsoft.com 2009-12-15 23:40:09 --- More observations:
- Before "hang" Wine prints the following message in winedbg:
Thread ID=0025 not in our list of threads -> can't rename
- During the "hang" the program executes code, I went through multiple various functions going between the game executable, something which looks like DirectX-specific codem and so on.
- After the "hang" (which keeps there approximately for five minutes) another similar message is printed in the debugger:
Thread ID=002c not in our list of threads -> can't rename fixme:dinput:SysMouseAImpl_Acquire Clipping cursor to (0,0)-(1680,1050)
and the game continues as usual.

--- Comment #9 from Mark Skinner marks@cinfinity.info 2010-12-28 13:06:49 CST --- I just played a few levels of Painkiller on Linux (compiled for Athlon 64), using standard Wine version 1.3.10 (compiled for Athlon-XP).
Both the savegame/autosave load and the Executioner kill sequence delays on the Babel map have been resolved. :)
