Bug ID: 38960 Summary: Steam 'steamwebhelper.exe' crashes Product: Wine Version: 1.7.47 Hardware: x86 OS: Mac OS X Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: b.adamski@mac.com
Created attachment 51903 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=51903 backtrace
This bug seemed fixed in 1.7.44 and 1.7.47 according to https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38493 and https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38602.
I still encountered the bug in 1.7.44 but it disappeared completely after switching to 1.7.47.
Yesterday (July 21st) Steam released an update and after updating the Steam version within the 1.7.47 Wineskin wrapper (OS X) the issue reoccurs.

--- Comment #1 from Nikolay Sivov bunglehead@gmail.com --- I can't reproduce this in clean prefix. Are you using Win7 mode? When exactly does it crash and what you have to do to make it crash?
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38960
--- Comment #2 from mactrix b.adamski@mac.com --- Yes, Windows 7.
You can find the port here: http://portingteam.com/files/file/8218-gta-iv-on-steam/

--- Comment #7 from Steven V. Wilson funmaker_11@yahoo.com --- I noticed this problem When I installed Dove tail games fishing (64 bit wine 1.7.51) I thought it might be a 64 bit issue. Today I installed Fable III and got the same error. I used a 32 bit wine prefix via wine 1.7.52. It seems that newer versions of wine have this problem. It sounds like steams recent update breaks something in wine. I used win7 mode for the fishing game. I didn't change the win mode from its default setting for the Fable III install. I am assuming its still win Vista. That suggests the problem is not just wine win mode 7 but also vista.

--- Comment #8 from Steven V. Wilson funmaker_11@yahoo.com --- I just started pre-loading Overlord: Fellowship of Evil. wine 1.7.53 with a 64bit prefix - no 32 bit version - and win mode 8. The bug is present. The Steam library is the other thing in Steam that works. I will add test data to the wine app. database after the program unlocks so I can test it. There is a suggestion of a future Steam for Linux version but Codemaster's have not confirmed that yet.

--- Comment #14 from Fincer fincer89@hotmail.com --- "Funny" thing is...I can't install any games which are only available for Windows. Simply because I'm not able to explore the Store page. I'd like to play a game with my friends but I simply can't because steamwebhelper crashes constantly and does not let me explore the store and install any Steam games.
Using Wine 1.7.55 32-bit prefix.

Just don't use Windows 7 mode in winecfg. Set it to Windows XP instead.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38960
--- Comment #16 from Fincer fincer89@hotmail.com --- Thanks for replying, mactrix
Switched to Windows XP mode (Wine 1.7.55) as instructed.
I'm still not able to get any view of Store page. Loading of it seems to take forever, according to the upper-right Steam loading icon. However, I get no any sign of steamwebhelper crash event (no dialogs or whatever appear). Store page just stays black forever.
Even if Windows XP mode would resolve this issue it raises bunch of others issues in the air:
What if a Steam game requires Windows 7 to be used at least but I'm forced to use Windows XP mode because of crashing steamwebhelper.exe? Do I need to switch between WinXP/Win7 modes if I either want to explore the Store page or play a Windows game? Doesn't sound very practical.
After all, using Windows XP mode doesn't offer a solution to the steamwebhelper issue, I think.

You can also configure the windows version for each application separately. Of course the bug is still valid, but the problem you have is most likely something else. Steamwebhelper is currently blocked by bug 39403.

The Store page remains black. I don't know what causes this but the issue got introduced a while ago. I read about the same issue from many Windows users who reported this in many comments on the web. Therefore I can't say if it's a Steam problem or something else. :-(
Do we want a new bug report for the black store page or can anyone figure out what is causing this?

You can set Windows 7 as default and then add the steamwebhelper.exe specifically in winecfg and assign Windows XP to it. It's quite a nice feature that winecfg allows different modes for different program files.

Yes, course. Sorry for that, didn't pop up in my mind in the first place. I could try that method to solve the WinXP/Win7 conflict.
-------------------------------
Generally speaking, I tested various system configurations addressed to store page problems:
1) Windows Steam Client + real Windows 7 environment = Store page loads as expected -> OK
2) Windows Steam Client + Clean Wine 1.7.55 prefix + Win7 mode = Store page stays black/in loading state, steamwebhelper crashes constantly in GUI
3) Windows Steam Client + Clean Wine 1.7.55 prefix + WinXP mode = Store page stays black/in loading state, steamwebhelper crashes in console but the crash event is not clearly visible in GUI. Short console output is as follows:
fixme:ntdll:NtQueryInformationToken QueryInformationToken( ..., TokenSessionId, ...) semi-stub fixme:ntdll:NtSetInformationJobObject stub: 0x26c 4 0x266e1ac 4 fixme:advapi:CreateProcessAsUserW 0x268 L"C:\Program Files\Steam\bin\steamwebhelper.exe" L""C:\Program Files\Steam\bin\steamwebhelper.exe" --type=renderer --disable-gpu-compositing --enable-err:module:attach_process_dlls "KERNEL32.dll" failed to initialize, aborting err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\Program Files\Steam\bin\steamwebhelper.exe" failed, status c0000005
-------------------------------
If we got rid of the steamwebhelper problem, that could help us figure out what's going on with the black store page: Whether the black page is caused by this particular steamwebhelper crash bug or if there is something else causing the black page problem.
Fixing steamwebhelper crash would reveal the nature of the black store page problem and thus give us a hint whether it is an individual bug or not.

Steamwebhelper contains the rendering engine for the embedded chromium browser, so of course its related. I already mentioned the corresponding bug report which currently blocks steamwebhelper (= the store page) in XP mode in my last comment. This bug, as the title says, is only for the issue in Win7 mode, which is totally unrelated.

It didn't work, but I had a look at the console output:

So the helper was being launched as an external program. I tried launching it from the Steam dir:

And I wonder if that kind of "path" ("\.\pipe\chrome.") for a windows named pipe is to blame. Particularly the fact that it ends in a dot. But it might be that an environment variable is used to pass some suffix from the Steam main process, or that the pipe is deleted by the main process if launching the child fails.

I am not sure if this is relevant so apologies in advance but in Wine-Staging 1.9.21 Steam's webhelper now only crashes when you exit Steam by clicking "Steam" in the client and then selecting "Exit"
Problem is that the backtrace never manages to actually load on my system. As I type this, the debugger is still "Loading detailed information, please wait..." in the window where you would see the backtrace.

Yup as expected that breaks, all web browser content, in Wineprefixes set to Windows 7. Even when running the Steam client with the -no-cef-sandbox commandline switch.
Hopefully they'll stick to this policy of not pushing this CEF update - e.g. on users with a Wineprefix Windows version of Windows XP.

I've been having issues like this, or no fonts appearing, for ages; no luck with either Win7 or WinXP mode, 32- or 64-bit prefix. With wine 2.0.0 on Ubuntu 16.04.1 the above yielded a login dialog with no text.
Once I added the -no-dwrite argument when running Steam.exe it all magically works again! Thanks for the info.

I don't need -no-dwrite anymore.
Make sure that you don't have left-overs from ancient Wine in your path or old dwrite.dll overrides in winecfg.
If everything looks good and you still have to use -no-dwrite, it would be nice to file a new bug.

What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |bingkan@outlook.com
--- Comment #72 from Asuka bingkan@outlook.com --- Still exists in wine 3.3 master branch. I know this is about I/O Completion Ports, and I find this patch:
https://github.com/wine-compholio/wine-staging/tree/master/patches/kernel32-...
on wine-staging's github.
I'm trying to apply this patch (only this patch) to wine 3.3 master branch, and after I recompile wine, the program can run without crash, but the web page still not show.
I think only patch the files above is not enough to make IOCP work, so I would like to know, what else I should do? Which patch should I apply?
Thanks!

Just don't use Windows 7 mode in winecfg. Set it to Windows XP instead.
Update: "Starting on January 1 2019, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems. This means that after that date the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.
The newest features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 7 and above.
For the remainder of 2018 Steam will continue to run and to launch games on Windows XP and Windows Vista, but other functionality in Steam will be somewhat limited. For example, new features such as the new Steam Chat will not be available. We encourage all users on these operating systems to upgrade to newer versions of Windows in order to have ongoing access to the latest features of Steam, and to ensure future access to all games and other Steam content." https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1558-AFCM-4577(In reply to mactrix from comment #15)

Thanks Sebastian, Jacek, Alistair, Zebediah
There are still use-cases (apps) where special mode flags are not supported, such as 'FILE_SKIP_SET_EVENT_ON_HANDLE':
https://golang.org/src/internal/poll/fd_windows.go?#L381
--- snip --- ... if pollable && useSetFileCompletionNotificationModes { // We do not use events, so we can skip them always. flags := uint8(syscall.FILE_SKIP_SET_EVENT_ON_HANDLE) // It's not safe to skip completion notifications for UDP: // https://blogs.technet.com/b/winserverperformance/archive/2008/06/26/designin... if net == "tcp" { flags |= syscall.FILE_SKIP_COMPLETION_PORT_ON_SUCCESS } err := syscall.SetFileCompletionNotificationModes(fd.Sysfd, flags) if err == nil && flags&syscall.FILE_SKIP_COMPLETION_PORT_ON_SUCCESS != 0 { fd.skipSyncNotif = true } } // Disable SIO_UDP_CONNRESET behavior. // http://support.microsoft.com/kb/263823 switch net { case "udp", "udp4", "udp6": ret := uint32(0) flag := uint32(0) size := uint32(unsafe.Sizeof(flag)) err := syscall.WSAIoctl(fd.Sysfd, syscall.SIO_UDP_CONNRESET, (*byte)(unsafe.Pointer(&flag)), size, nil, 0, &ret, nil, 0) if err != nil { return "wsaioctl", err } } ... ---- snip ---
(also Steam client)
They deserve a separate ticket.
