Bug #: 29816 Summary: Homeworld2 1.1 has no audio Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: n.andrew.walsh@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified
Since at least April of 2011, Homeword2 1.1 has no audio. Installation/patching/installing the no-cd patch (needed under 1.1) all works fine, but the game runs without any sound. Only error I see in the console is the usual one about "Don't know what to do with 10000 audio channels."

--- Comment #3 from N. Andrew Walsh n.andrew.walsh@gmail.com 2012-02-06 13:56:24 CST --- Thanks for the help. I've updated as instructed, run with the audio debugging flags, and attached the resultant log. A little while down I see these lines:
0009:trace:alsa:AUDDRV_GetEndpointIDs 0 0x33e7b8 0x33e7b4 0x33e7b0 0x33e7ac 0009:warn:alsa:alsa_try_open The device "plughw:0,0" failed to open: -16 (Device or resource busy). 0009:warn:alsa:alsa_try_open The device "plughw:0,0" failed to open: -16 (Device or resource busy).
and some others, all of which repeat. But perhaps you can make more sense of it than I?
Again, the audio test in winecfg itself works just fine.

--- Comment #4 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy-bugzilla@kievinfo.com 2012-02-06 20:36:30 CST --- What Wine version? If it's not wine-1.4-rc2 - upgrade. If problem persists, remove your wineprefix or try with a clean one.

--- Comment #5 from N. Andrew Walsh n.andrew.walsh@gmail.com 2012-02-07 03:27:04 CST --- Thanks for the advice. Sorry I didn't clarify before: the "update" referred to previously was to wine-1.4-rc2. The prefix is clean. Problem persists. The log is above.
Cheers,

--- Comment #6 from N. Andrew Walsh n.andrew.walsh@gmail.com 2012-02-29 06:12:10 CST --- UPDATE: I've updated to 1.4_rc5, again using a clean prefix. The new audio test still works fine, but there's no audio in-game. Are there any errors in the debug log that might help?
Thanks.

--- Comment #7 from N. Andrew Walsh n.andrew.walsh@gmail.com 2012-03-13 13:28:25 CDT --- I've upgraded to wine-1.4, which seems to have a new alsa driver. I have audio in the other games I play under wine (EVE Online, Portal 2), but this one - which is now up to version 8.2.2) still has none.
For what it's worth, the audio device is listed is "HDA ATI-SB - ALC888" in winecfg. Audio test there works fine.
Have you found anything helpful in the debug text?
Thanks,
A

--- Comment #8 from Andrew Eikum aeikum@codeweavers.com 2012-03-20 08:10:43 CDT --- I grabbed the demo for this game and audio is working fine for me.
Can you attach another log with the latest Wine you have access to (please mention the version) and include "+quartz,+devenum" in addition to the other debug channels?

--- Comment #9 from N. Andrew Walsh n.andrew.walsh@gmail.com 2012-03-20 10:29:43 CDT --- Thanks for the help!
hrm. Well, now I've updated to wine 1.5.0, and I'm back to having no audio in winecfg (and no audio in any other wine program). This test worked under 1.4.0. The driver listed is "winealsa.drv." It doesn't make a difference what output I choose, but the options for "Output Device" are:
(System Default) HDA ATI SB - ALC888 Digital HDA ATI SB - ALC888 Analog default
Anyway, I've attached a log from running the following command:
WINEDEBUG=+tid,+mmdevapi,+winmm,+driver,+midi,+dsound,+dmusic,+mci,+oss,+alsa,+coreaudio,+quartz,+devenum wine Bin/Release/Homeworld2.exe -mod Complex822.big &> /home/~/winedbg2.txt

Well, that's no good. Can you give a log (usual audio log channels) of just running winecfg and pressing Test Sound? Let's try to get that working again before we work on Homeworld 2.

--- Comment #12 from N. Andrew Walsh n.andrew.walsh@gmail.com 2012-03-23 14:19:34 CDT --- not sure what the problem was with winecfg, but clearing my wineprefix and installing fresh makes the sound check work again.
Homeworld2, however, still does not :(
Do you have access to a full install? I'm using the full install, patched to 1.1, patched with a no-cd patch (1.1 needs it) and then patched with the complex mod. However, I already couldn't get audio just with the straight 1.1 version (so it isn't the complex mod).
Thanks for the help.

--- Comment #13 from Andrew Eikum aeikum@codeweavers.com 2012-03-23 14:24:43 CDT --- No, I don't. I tested with the demo I found here http://www.fileplanet.com/129916/120000/fileinfo/Homeworld-2---Demo. I have to launch it with the "-nopbuffer" switch. You could try installing that in a clean prefix and see if it's a problem with just the full game.

--- Comment #14 from N. Andrew Walsh n.andrew.walsh@gmail.com 2012-06-10 09:40:57 CDT --- Thanks for the link (and sorry for the late reply). I've tried downloading the demo with no success (they all quit after about 50MB). I'll keep trying.
In the meantime, wine is now at 1.5.6, and I still have no audio in HW2.
Cheers

--- Comment #15 from Andrew Eikum aeikum@codeweavers.com 2012-06-10 10:32:31 CDT --- To recap: The only sound problem you're having is with HW2, right? You've got winecfg Test Sound and such working, right?
If that's correct, what would be useful now is: * A log from Wine 1.5.6 with the full game with the debug channels from Comment 10. * Confirmation that the demo has the same problem.

I get no sound on the demo, either. Attached is the full debug output running the command from #10.

--- Comment #17 from Andrew Eikum aeikum@codeweavers.com 2012-06-11 10:56:42 CDT --- I just discovered something. If you run the game from the Bin/Release directory, you get sound. If you run it from outside that directory, you get no sound. Can you try this?
I don't know if it works this way on Windows.

--- Comment #18 from N. Andrew Walsh n.andrew.walsh@gmail.com 2012-06-11 12:10:01 CDT --- what the…?
You are correct: even running the modded HW2, using the complex mod, I have sound, *if* I run it from inside the /Release directory. Madness!
So, uh, any idea what's going on with that? And thanks a ton for the simple insight.

It's probably just the way the application is programmed. I assume it's looking for some file in the current directory, so if you run it from the wrong directory, it fails to find that file and as a result audio doesn't work. If you look at the shortcut on Windows, you'll see it points to .../Bin/Release. And so does the .desktop file that Wine creates.
I tried to run the demo on my Windows 7 install to see if I could reproduce the change in behavior there, but it refused to run. Anyways, I'm tempted to close as INVALID. Would you object to that?

--- Comment #20 from N. Andrew Walsh n.andrew.walsh@gmail.com 2012-06-16 17:34:30 CDT --- Well, since this doesn't seem to be an issue with how wine itself runs - but rather lazy programming on the part of HW2 - then yes, I suppose it's invalid.
Now, if we could just get multiplayer working …
(but that's another thread) ;)
Thanks for all the help
