I've got some other issues with the game though (like rendering a frame, even right in the beginning, before reaching the menu, taking several seconds, i.e. the call to glDrawArrays in drawStridedFast ... settings visual treatment to low resolves this, removing texture access in the pixel shaders too) and can't say what other effects on the graphics this might have.
