Summary: wine-1.1.x slows to ~0.5 fps or locks up on new Core2 Quad Product: Wine Version: 1.1.2 Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: roy@marples.name
Old computer was amd64, 2Gig RAM, nVidia 7800GTS running Gentoo Linux (unstable). wine has always run my games reasonably well :)
New computer (old one died) intel Core2 Quad, nVidia 9800GX2, 4Gig Ram - again running Gentoo Linux (unstable) After $random amount of time games suddenly slowdown to less than a frame per second and/or lock hard. Mouse is still responsive, but cannot actually click anything. Sound either stops or loops over the same part. Launching game via console does not show anything out of the ordinary. I've ruled out audio as turning off audio in either game doesn't alleviate the issue.
When game locks like this, the OS is still perfectly usable - can alt-tab out, email, browse, compile, etc. Closing the game I can re-start it again. However, this is not entirely desirable :)
Games affected EVE-Online Classix EVE-Online Premium World Of Warcraft (OpenGL mode)
I can't get EVE to run under wine debugger via relay. When I terminate the debugger EVE then starts. I can no longer test WoW as my account expired.
EVE wrapped cedega client does not exhibit this issue, neither do native games such as Doom3 or Quake4.
If any more information is required to help fix this issue, no matter how small, I'm happy to help :)

--- Comment #1 from Lei Zhang thestig@google.com 2008-08-18 11:45:26 --- Were you using Wine 1.1.2 on your old computer as well? Can you try the old video card in the new computer?

--- Comment #2 from Roy Marples roy@marples.name 2008-08-19 14:41:31 --- Unsure as to the exact wine version. It certainly had 1.1.0 on. Probably not 1.1.1 or 1.1.2. However, 1.0.0 through to 1.1.2 all exhibit the same issue. I cannot test older versions due to compile failures due to API changes.
Anyway, I found this message just as it started to slow down
fixme:d3d:CreateVBO Failed to create a vertex buffer object. Continuing, but performance issues can occur
It was hard to find as the console was full of this message constantly
fixme:d3d_draw:drawStridedFast >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glDrawElements @ drawprim.c / 269

Can you try the old video card in the new computer?
Sorry no. The old one was AGP, new system is PCIe only.

--- Comment #4 from Roy Marples roy@marples.name 2008-08-20 06:50:33 --- Seems to be related to the graphics card - see bugs #14395 and bug #10594. Sorry for not searching harder.
However, EVE Classic locks up as well, with this error err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x12e0e4b0 "?" wait timed out in thread 0020, blocked by 0000, retrying (60 sec) err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x166e5b0 "?" wait timed out in thread 0018, blocked by 0020, retrying (60 sec)
That was with wine-1.0.0 - I'm trying the current git version of wine to see if it's been fixed.
