Bug #: 32620 Summary: Warcraft Voice Chat cannot capture voice. Product: Wine Version: 1.5.20 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: winealsa.drv AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: rankincj@yahoo.com Classification: Unclassified
Playing WoW (MoP) with Wine 1.5.17, 18, 20:
The built-in voice chat functionality is no longer capturing voice correctly, and sounds like "R2D2 on drugs" instead. This can be reproduced both during "live" char sessions and also when testing "capture" from the Voice settings panel.
I have reproduced this bug both with and without PulseAudio; with Intel HDA, Audigy 2 and Xonar D1 cards. So I must assume that this is something relating to Wine and ALSA.
Capturing audio from the command line via: $ arecord -t wav -f cd -d 5 > test.wav
results in a correct WAV file.

--- Comment #1 from rankincj@yahoo.com 2012-12-31 15:11:00 CST --- This definitely used to work with earlier versions of WoW/Wine.

--- Comment #2 from rankincj@yahoo.com 2013-01-23 18:29:53 CST --- And "no", I can't remember which were the precise last versions of Wine/WoW where voice capture worked. And it's impossible to downgrade WoW to that version again anyway. (I dimly recall MoP being unplayable with Wine when it was released too).
However, this bug would be trivial for other people to confirm because it happens with the "Voice Test".

--- Comment #3 from rankincj@yahoo.com 2013-05-26 07:58:00 CDT --- Possibly fixed by:
commit 508b0c9c44349a5d980e0f1ee0ba4fca871bd2cb Author: Andrew Eikum aeikum@codeweavers.com Date: Thu May 16 09:24:31 2013 -0500
dsound: Don't overrun capture buffer.
Which would make this bug related to bug #31684.

--- Comment #4 from rankincj@yahoo.com 2013-05-27 16:37:07 CDT --- I've noticed that the "R2D2 on Drugs" effect no longer happens on my 32 bit box with an Audigy2 sound card and running Wine 1.5.25. However, it still happens with my x86_64 box with an Intel HDA sound card running Wine 1.5.29.

--- Comment #5 from rankincj@yahoo.com 2013-05-28 17:52:02 CDT --- This bug appears to be a "32 bit vs 64 bit" problem. For me, the "Voice Capture" works with the 32 bit Wow.exe and is "R2D2" with Wow-64.exe. However, I've heard of one case where it's working with Wow-64.exe but is broken with Wow.exe - go figure?!

--- Comment #6 from Josh Ellithorpe quest@mac.com 2013-07-05 21:39:48 CDT --- I can also confirm this bug. For the time being I have found that wine 1.4.1 doesn't exhibit the problem and appears to play ok. All versions of 1.5.x and 1.6 seem to give me the r2d2 effect on my Lenovo X1 Carbon even though everything else works perfectly.
If there is anything I can do to help debug the issue I would be happy to help.

--- Comment #7 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for over a year. Is this still an issue in current (1.7.37 or newer) wine? If so, please attach the terminal output in 1.7.37 (see http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log).

--- Comment #8 from Chris Rankin rankincj@yahoo.com --- I suspect that this bug is another manifestation of bug #31684. And the "R2D2 on drugs" problem appears to be fixed now.
