Summary: Endnote X1: crashes when selecting text by mouse Product: Wine Version: 0.9.57. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: d_kammerer@web.de
Wine crashes while running Endnote X1. When I am editing a reference in Endnote, Wine crashes frequently. It always crahes when I select some text by holding down the left mouse key. But it also crashes in other situations where I could not pick the trigger yet.
System: Ubuntu Gutsy with Wine 9.57

--- Comment #1 from Daniel Kammerer d_kammerer@web.de 2008-03-17 09:10:33 --- I did some more testing: Endnote only crashes when the selected text contains either the beginning or the end of the text field.

--- Comment #2 from Lei Zhang thestig@google.com 2008-03-17 10:25:30 --- Can you attach the crash logs? i.e.
wine endnote_program_name.exe > endnote_crashlog.txt 2>&1
Do you know if the demo has the same problem?

--- Comment #5 from Daniel Kammerer d_kammerer@web.de 2008-03-17 16:37:49 --- The Endnote demo has the same problem, so this provides a good test case:
1. download and install endnote demo from http://www.endnote.com/endemo.asp 2. Run Endnote and select "create new endnote library" from the initial menu 3. create a new referenc (CTRL + N) 4. Enter some text into any field (e.g. "John Doe" into the Author field) 5. Click into another field (e.g. Year) 6. Use the mouse to select the text (or some part of it) in the previous field starting from the last character. 7. Release the mouse button 8. (if not crashed yet) click into another field

--- Comment #6 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-03-21 23:45:52 --- Confirming in wine 0.9.58.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12075
--- Comment #7 from Daniel Kammerer d_kammerer@web.de 2008-03-26 11:05:02 --- I upgraded wine from 0.9.57 to 0.9.58.
Now Endnote does not crash anymore when selecting a text by mouse including the first or last character.
However it does crash when holding down the left mouse key in a text field and moving the mouse cursor out of the field (upwards or downwards) while keeping the mouse button pressed. The cursor freezes and after half a second the Endnote window is closed. The error message is "run.c:193: ME_RunOfsFromCharOfs: Assertion `nCharOfs >= nParaOfs' failed." (see attached crash log: crashlog2)
Is this narrowing down the same bug or is this another one (in other words, should I open a new bug report?)
I would like to do a clean new install with wine 0.9.58 but I don't know how to completely unistall endnote and remove all wine preferences and profiles, can anyone give me some instructions?

--- Comment #10 from Daniel Kammerer d_kammerer@web.de 2008-04-03 08:19:09 --- Okay, I did a fresh install of wine 0.9.58 and Endnote X1.
Still the same crash:
When selecting text in a text field (by holding down the left mouse key) and moving the mouse cursor (with button pressed) out of the field (left, right, up or down) the cursor freezes and after half a second the Endnote window is closed.
The error message is "run.c:193: ME_RunOfsFromCharOfs: Assertion `nCharOfs >= nParaOfs' failed." (see crash log comment 7...).

--- Comment #19 from Ejoc sapporarn@yahoo.com 2008-05-27 10:44:18 --- The winetricks work-around also resolved similar crashing editing output styles and selecting text. It also improved character display in the output style templates.
Tested using Wine-1.0-rc2
