I'm wondering if SHGetValue for SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\Application\XLive\TypesSupported is returning the right value (should be 0x7), since it seems to be the last function called before something goes wrong. Something is probably going wrong a bit earlier.

Nope copying the xlive.dll into the game folder or wine's system32 don't fix the problem.

--- Comment #22 from Milan Troller gad.pade.r@seznam.cz 2009-01-05 14:34:21 --- On some forums I watch, somebody had problems with service pack detection on native windows in GTAIV, and somebody mentioned string CSDVersion in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows\CSDVersion where is the service pack version. Each hundred (i.e: 100 = SP1, 200 = SP2) represents a service pack. So you can fake one.
I don't know if this could help, but I just noticed it, so I post it.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16328
--- Comment #23 from Johan Dahlin jdahlin@async.com.br 2009-01-05 14:49:07 --- Okay, finally some real success. The problem is really in xlive.dll, there's a stubbed out version of it available from the GTAIV modding community which helps GTAIV to proceed much further, it's available here: http://public.sannybuilder.com/GTA4/xliveless-0.93.rar
It includes sources and binaries, that could potentially be used to create a native wine wrapper for xlive.dll, since the native dll is unlikely to work in the foreseeable future.
Once the dll is used we're getting into DirectX problems, eventually an error, "TEXP70: Unable to create depth render target - Please re-install DirectX and/or install the latest video card driver." will be displayed.
Note, I've installed the following components via winetricks: vcrun2005sp1 msxml3 wmp9 gecko winxp. I have a patch to change the default service pack level under WinXP mode to 3.0 which should help here.

Hi,
I am a bit stuck here, I always got errors like RMN40 or similar (saying that GTA4 requires at least SP3 on WinXP to run). I even tried the most recent wine from Git without luck. Can this perhaps be updated on the wine side?
Anyway, is there a workaround for now? You said something about a patch. Where can I get it?
Thanks, Albert

Try the same solution, as for windows...there is a problem with running GTA4 on SP2...but you can change value "CSDVersion" in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows"
The default value is 0x00000200, try to set 0x00000300
This helps in windows, maybe on linux too +)

Are you using a Cedega PREFIX?? Cedega is not supported here.

Yes, it's a prefix which was initially created by Cedega, but why does that matter that much? I am using the official wine and right now with all DLLs set to builtin, so besides some extern DLLs which are not part of wine anyway and some registry settings, there shouldn't be any difference, or am I wrong here?
I was hoping to get some more success (after I solved the initial problems) when I use later some of the DLLs of Cedega (together with the official wine).
Can you perhaps give me some hints what WINEDEBUG settings could help me in finding out why it just quits without doing anything?

The app must be installed under Wine, otherwise the setup is invalid.

But I have done the setup with the official Wine. I only created the prefix with Cedega. And Cedega is also only using Wine under the hood.
Besides, why do you think it is invalid? The setup just worked fine and everything seems to be in place.
Can you perhaps give me some hints what WINEDEBUG settings could help me in finding out why it just quits without doing anything?

The prefix must be also created by Wine. Cedega's Wine is utterly old, and is not compatible with WineHQ Wine anymore.

Ok, created a wineprefix with wine, did the whole installation again and I am getting this now:

--- Comment #42 from Albert Zeyer ich@az2000.de 2009-01-29 15:38:00 --- I tried to reinstall VC80 to have the correct manifest but everytime I start the setup, this error is popping up:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\mscorsvw.exe
R6034 An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly. Please contact the application's support team for more information.
Then it waits for about 20 seconds (it just does nothing at this time) and after that (even if I don't clicked away the first error message) the VC80 setup starts.
After confirming the licence in the VC80 setup, it goes through and asks at the end if I want to restart my computer. I just click yes and the setup exists again with the same error popping up as above.
And the setup itself also didn't worked correctly, the manifests are still not there:

Removing windows/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v2.0.50727 solved this problem.

--- Comment #45 from Albert Zeyer ich@az2000.de 2009-01-29 15:54:28 --- (In reply to comment #44)
Removing windows/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v2.0.50727 solved this problem.
After doing that, a previous workaround worked again for installing VC80 correctly:
It seems to be another bug in Wine. The VC80 setup does not work correctly (it does not generate the manifest files) when you use the builtin-version of mscoree and/or using a windows version greater than 2000. So force mscoree to native, set the Windows version to Win2000, run the VC80 setup again and you should have the correct manifest.
After that, I finally had them: az@acompneu ~ $ ls /mnt/data3b/wine/GTA4/drive_c/windows/winsxs/manifests/ x86_Microsoft.VC80.ATL_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_cbb27474.cat x86_Microsoft.VC80.ATL_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_cbb27474.manifest x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_6b128700.cat x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_6b128700.manifest x86_Microsoft.VC80.MFC_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_3bf8fa05.cat x86_Microsoft.VC80.MFC_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_3bf8fa05.manifest x86_Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_91481303.cat x86_Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_91481303.manifest x86_Microsoft.VC80.OpenMP_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_6c18549a.cat x86_Microsoft.VC80.OpenMP_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_6c18549a.manifest x86_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.2600.2982_none_deadbeef.manifest x86_System.EnterpriseServices_b03f5f7f11d50a3a_2.0.0.0_x-ww_7d5f3790.manifest az@acompneu ~ $

OK, I uninstalled Mono 2.2 and tried with MS .NET 2.0 again (in the hope that it perhaps works with the correct VC80 manifest files). The installation was again successfull.

Now, running Rockstar Games Social Club gives me this error:
I tried also a recent Wine from Git (snapshot is two days old now) but I am just getting the same error.
The main problem seems to be this:
Unhandled Exception: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'PresentationFramework, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070002

For the love of all that's holy, stop pasting logs in bugzilla. Attach them. Pasted logs A) are hard to read and B) make the bug report really long and messy.
Furthermore, most of these logs aren't helpful. It seems to rely heavily on dotnet20, which is still very much a work in progress on wine.

Sorry, have read that too late. I am used to that because it's easier to read, you don't have to download&extract each log for viewing.

How have the other solved the problem with Rockstar Games Social Club? Is there any patch for GTA4 where it doesn't need RGSC? Or any RGSC dummy, similar to the xliveless?

Check the AppDB. Bugzilla is for reporting/fixing bugs, not howto's on broken applications.

I thought this is the bug report about GTA4 not working.
I don't care about RGSC, I just want to run GTA4 and it does not work which must be a bug in Wine at some place. And I want to help fixing this bug.
Besides, RGSC is not in the AppDB.
If you want any traces or other debugging information for figuring out the bug in Wine, I can give it. I already asked multiple times what more information you need. And I already tried to give as much as possible.

It is.

Fair enough, but unless you know how to code, you won't be the one fixing the bug, and until someone that does have the ability to fix it comes along, it's superfluous.
Besides, RGSC is not in the AppDB.
Make an entry.

Appreciated, but most of those logs are not useful for this bug, dupes of other bugs, or should be labeled as other bugs. We could have a bug of 'wine doesn't work for all applications', but it wouldn't be useful. Bug reports should be simple, direct, and exact, not all encompassing.

I know how to code. :)
Though I know very less about the Wine internals at the moment. I planned already multiple times to get involved a bit in the Wine development but actually never came to it.
Now again could be the time as I would really like to be able to play this game. But I really need some hints where I could start.
For example: How can I figure out how GTA4 checks if RGSC is running and how can I make it think that RGSC is running? (If I would be able to do this, I would not need to run RGSC in the background; something I don't want to do anyway.) I wonder how the others here have solved this problem as they don't seem to have it.
Then after I have overcome this problem, it seems (other reported that here) that GTA4 fails because of some unimplemented D3D functions. Where can I get some documentation what these unimplemented function should do?

--- Comment #57 from Rico kgbricola@web.de 2009-02-10 10:43:06 --- I checked wines d3d9 on win xp and the game starts fine (without any patches for wines dlls). The menu looks good, but in the game the screen is black and only the mini map could be seen. So these patches shouldn't be needed for the game to start.
But on wine I'm stuck at the launch off .net, which is required by the social club stuff.

--- Comment #58 from Johan Dahlin jdahlin@async.com.br 2009-02-10 11:16:36 --- There's no need to run the RGSC at all, I brought it up without that. Try this: 1) install the game on XP 2) start with a clean ~/.wine 3) winetricks vcrun2005sp1 msxml3 wmp9 gecko winxp (mono20 might be needed, can't remember) 4) Bump the service pack version in ntdll/ to 3.0 5) install xliveless.dll over the one provided by Microsoft Games for Windows 6) Run the game without cracks applied 7) You should be able to get up the license screen before it complains as it did for me in comment 23.

--- Comment #60 from cruiseoveride cruiseoveride@gmail.com 2009-02-20 14:29:22 --- I've noticed some people are getting a little frustrated with the development of this bug. I would like to see new games like GTA4 working under Linux as much as the next person. But please remember that wine is meant to be a clean implementation of windows API on Linux. Running Windows applications is merely a by product of this effort. Wine is not a hack job to trick poorly coded programs into working.
As I see it, if the goal is to get an application to work under wine, one needs to first find what the minimum required implementations are. This process deals with "hacking", stubbing out functions with glamorous return values to please the application's logic, up to a point at which the application crashes.
Implementing API is fairly straight forward, but dancing around the logic that causes the application to finally crash is an art in my opinion.
Enough of my rant. Those of you who have the game, have you tried VirtualBox+wine3d? It may help with some of the misc .net issues (but uses wine3d).
Install the latest VBox and Wine3D Here is a link to a wine3d build http://aybabtu.com/rmh/wined3d/
Dx8 and Dx9 seems to work.

Hi I made debug log file, current wine git (today updated), it look like something in D3D maybe in vertex shaders, look at the 20 lines before unahndled page fault, they are different than parts before this last Vertex Declaration.
How did you managed to get further without rockstar social club?

I think you should use "WINEDEBUG=+d3d_caps" debug option without quotes, and see what depth format would like to use. I think the problem is because, wine doesn't support some formats.

--- Comment #68 from Janus Trolesen ysangkok@gmail.com 2009-04-13 15:53:22 --- "TEXP70 is a new error code we have put into the patch, this indicates that something is incompatible with your driver and the game. The first thing to do is to uninstall your current driver and install the latest from Nvidia or ATi. Sometimes errors occur during driver installation and you have to repeat the process. If your computer gets a black screen or blue screen hang during driver installation and you reboot, windows will likely revert you back to a restore state, the new driver has not been installed properly if this happens. If this continues to happen you can try to install the driver in Windows Safe Mode."

When a game complains about shader model 3 not being present it's almost certainly either a) wine too old, b) your hardware cannot run the game (even in native Windows!) or c) something's wrong with your videocard drivers. Such support is beyond the scope of bugzilla.

When a game complains about shader model 3 not being present it's almost certainly either a) wine too old, b) your hardware cannot run the game (even in native Windows!) or c) something's wrong with your videocard drivers. Such support is beyond the scope of bugzilla.

a) $ wine --version wine-1.1.25
b) this game runs perfectly on this hardware in windows (GeForce 8800GT, 2GiB of RAM, Pentium 4 3200GHz)
c) well... maybe it's because i compiled wine before nvidia driver installation - so with MESA include/GL. Now recompiling with nvidia's includes. __________
For people who try to use xliveless to disable RGSC but fail to do this: check that your GTAIV.exe is version 1.0.1.0 at least, if it's older, then xliveless won't patch the game. Patch to update GTAIV can be found on the rockstar website http://www.rockstargames.com/support/IV/PC/patch/index.html

Which reminds me of bug #16559. In that thread, there is a patch for a bug that's about not being able to translate Pixelformat 70.
So I would see the connection - TEXP70, TEXturePixelformat70.
But again maybe it's just coincidence.

"Before patch i've got no textures at all in my game. After patch i'm getting TEXP70 Error..."
"First - GTA IV runs WITHOUT ANY TEXTURES! After patching - TEXP70!!!"
"First to install the patch, i don't view textures on GTA4, now installed the patch, and the game... NOT START ANYMORE !!! TEXTP70"
"I 've got the same problem, at first it ran but without most of the textures, now i get the TEXP70 error after installing the patch and no game at all"
The funny thing is, before applying the patch from Andrew Church, I was missing many textures in Trickstyle. Sounds very similar. So his patch just might also get TEXP70 out of the way.
You might be wondering why I'm not testing it myself, but I do not own a copy of GTA IV, so I can't. I plan on waiting for it to run on wine before I buy. ;-)

GTA IV FATAL ERROR: DD3D50 GTA IV FATAL ERROR: D3D Error - Shader Model 3.0 or higher is required
After i press OK i get long list of 0xcdcdcdcd on the console.
How can i get to that TEXP70 step? Or, maybe it is already after this?

When a game complains about shader model 3 not being present it's almost certainly either a) wine too old, b) your hardware cannot run the game (even in native Windows!) or c) something's wrong with your videocard drivers. Such support is beyond the scope of bugzilla.

a) wine too old, b) your hardware cannot run the game (even in
native Windows!) or c) something's wrong with your videocard drivers
a) $ wine --version wine-1.1.25
b) this game runs perfectly on this hardware in windows (GeForce 8800GT, 2GiB of RAM, Pentium 4 3200GHz)
c) well... maybe it's because i compiled wine before nvidia driver installation - so with MESA include/GL.
--- Comment #75 from Ruslan b7.10110111@gmail.com 2009-07-07 18:47:44 --- OK, now solved shader model 3 problem: for some reason "Allow Pixel Shader" option didn't work as set up specifically for GTAIV.exe and it was disabled by default. Now i get this TEXP70.

--- Comment #77 from W3ird_N3rd mailme667@yahoo.co.uk 2009-07-22 11:02:19 --- It's probably just coincidence, but translating TEXP70 to normal English would make me think of TEXture, P, 70.
Which reminds me of bug #16559. In that thread, there is a patch for a bug that's about not being able to translate Pixelformat 70.
So I would see the connection - TEXP70, TEXturePixelformat70.
But again maybe it's just coincidence.
--- Comment #78 from W3ird_N3rd mailme667@yahoo.co.uk 2009-07-25 12:21:58 --- I took another look at those forums, and these quotes makes me feel I might be right:
I plan on waiting for it to run on wine before I buy. ;-)
--- Comment #79 from Ruslan b7.10110111@gmail.com 2009-08-25 04:17:43 --- I tried Andrew Church's patch on wine-1.1.28, it didn't change anything for GTAIV - still TEXP70. First gta4Browser.exe crashes, then i get TEXP70, but after that startup sound is played.

EXP70 is a new error code we have put into the patch, this indicates that something is incompatible with your driver and the game. If this continues to happen you can try to install the driver in Windows Safe Mode. -Rockstar Toronto source: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=385146&st=0

But is this specific to the Nvidia/ATI driver detection failing under WINE? If this is the case, the previous comment would suggest that the way to get it working under WINE is somehow to imitate the behavior of the Windows driver.

The answer posted on that forum is not really helpful at all. Someone needs to look at a trace of what is called before the error dialog appears which might help determine what is being checked. I would, but I don't have this game.

http://mgmt.sth.sze.hu/~andras/wine/gta4/gta4_1.png http://mgmt.sth.sze.hu/~andras/wine/gta4/gta4_2.png http://mgmt.sth.sze.hu/~andras/wine/gta4/gta4_3.png
detailed howto:
you have to patch your wine source with this patch: http://mgmt.sth.sze.hu/~andras/wine/gta4/add_intz_to_ds_formats.patch
1, Install .net fw 3.0 (with winetricks) 2, Install gta 4 3, copy nocd crack (razor 1911) to game directory (copy protection wont work) 4, download & install patch 1.0.0.4 5, downoad xliveless from http://public.sannybuilder.com/GTA4/xliveless-0.99b1.rar and copy xlive.dll to game's directory (RSGC and Xlive won't work). 6, start the game with LaunchGTAIV.exe 7, Have fun :)
It has been tested with: Ubuntu 9.10 x86 Core 2 duo E6400 NVidia GF GTX260 (driver: 3.2.0 NVIDIA 190.42)
If you have any problems regarding this mini howto just tell me.

Thanks for this patch! I have no time to test it, but is it playable? Also graphics are fine from what i can see, can you save the game progress without xlive?

The speed is slow, but it can be because i have 1680x1050 resolution, and can't set it lower, because it won't display anything. With my config i would say it runs with 2-3 fps in the city, and 10-15 in interior.
Also graphics are fine from what i can see, can you save the game progress without xlive?
Yes, Xliveless works around this too. Only glitches what i have seen: - blacks dots on Roman's head, - small textures missing from cars - weird circles around light sources.

I'm not that lucky. I can barely play it on lowest settings in 800x600 and if there's no action around. But hey, at least it runs without Windows! Now I just need to hope for performance improvements in the 3D stack. :)
My current rig is an AMD X2 BE-2350, 4GB RAM and GeForce 9600GT 1GB and the game runs great in native Windows.

I found that by default GTAIV has affinity of 1. Having changed it to 0ffffffff (effectively to 3 on my HT machine), i got it use secont HT thread. Try this, maybe it'll make performance a bit better. This program could be used to set CPU affinity: http://www.linuxjournal.com/files/linuxjournal.com/linuxjournal/articles/067...

AFAIK, GTAIV selects number of threads itself. All the command line options i know aren't related to number of threads/affinity.

--- Comment #136 from Lars Blomqvist knaprigt@gmail.com 2010-01-12 00:05:07 --- Well, I finally got this one running with the patch provided by Andras Kovacs (tanks a bunch for that one!). Seems to be working well besides the utterly bad performance, some minor graphic glitches and the fact that I'm forced to run it in windowed mode (wont start without that switch).
Currently running the game with the following command line (just -safemode might do the same but I want my resolution):
"WINEDEBUG=-all nice -20 aoss wine LaunchGTAIV.exe -renderquality 0 -shadowdensity 0 -texturequality 0 -viewdistance 0 -detailquality 0 -novblank -width 1440 -height 900 -frameLimit 1 -refreshrate 60 -windowed -percentvidmem 100 -minspecaudio -nomemrestrict"

Your update doesn't compile because of missing comma in utils.c chunk. After i add this missing comma, the game works as it did in 1.1.35 with the original patch.

Hello,
When i want to add the patch to wine 1.1.35, i have an error message.
patching file include/wine/wined3d.idl Hunk #1 FAILED at 265.
Find this text in wined3d.idl: typedef enum _WINED3DFORMAT and in this enum insert this text: WINED3DFMT_INTZ = 0x5a544e49, /* INTZ */ before this:
WINED3DFMT_FORCE_DWORD = 0xffffffff
If you get compilation errors after this, then you did something wrong.

Other question : Why i must to use xliveless ? To can save the game? If yes, can i to use it in other game?
You have to use XLiveLess since this will bypass the need to use RGSC which doesn't work in WINE. You will be able to save games. But i couldn't use the same savegames on another installation (but you might succeed).

Patch is to be applied to wine *source* tree, not ~/.wine. Once you download source tarball, you should do something like this:
tar xvf /path/to/wine-<version>.tar.bz2 cd wine-<version> patch -p1 -i /path/to/patch.patch ./configure --prefix=/wine/install/prefix make make install
Anyway, this code is not to be copied&pasted. You should first learn how to patch&compile&install programs

Tried overwriting the xlive.dll under ".wine/drive_c/windows/system32/" with the one from xliveless? I dunno, but maybe GTA4 prefers that location over your game directory for some reason.

I know that this shouldn't be in discussion about bug 16328, but I for some reason can't patch the game. I have tried a few patches, including the one you just posted, and both when launched from a blank .wine or a .wine wit the the GTAIV installed, it does totally nothing. No output in console, it even returns the prompt in a few seconds. No window error. Complete nothing. Wine 1.1.37. Any idea why this could happen?

Nah, just checked - it's not. The same error as with unpatched 1.3.1 version still occurs. Also, D3DXCreateTextureFromResourceExW wasn't the reason for this game not working. Austin English must have confused this bug report with some another.
