Summary: Civilization IV Beyond the Sword crashed when trying to start a new game. Product: Wine Version: 1.3.8 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: msxml3 AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: f.pinamartins@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=32176) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=32176) Crash log with WINEDEBUG=+tid,+msxml,+variant
The crash mentioned in the summary occurs only if using builtin msxml3. Reverting this dll to native will make the game start just fine. I attached a logfile with WINEDEBUG=+tid,+msxml,+variant. This should allow more progress on the builtin msxml3 lib.

Unfortunately none of the msxml debug info made it into the log. Also there is some output corruption, this happens sometimes when you use &> to direct to the log file instead of &>>. How big is the whole log (compressed/uncompressed)?

--- Comment #10 from Francisco Pina Martins f.pinamartins@gmail.com 2010-12-02 17:24:15 CST --- The original logfile is 7.4 Gb. Compressed with Lzma it is 75Mb.
I can upload it tomorrow morning to my public dropbox as I did some time ago. Right now my upload speed just won't cut it.
I am getting the logs using the following redirect: .....Civ4BeyondSword.exe > ~/Desktop/Civ4BTS+tid,+msxml,+variant,+relay.log 2>&1 I remember researching about this and it came up as the recommended way in several places. How would you recommend doing it?

The original logfile is 7.4 Gb. Compressed with Lzma it is 75Mb.
Wow, that's probably a little much... maybe cut it down to 10-20M lines. Anything over 1 GB uncompressed is too much. After the crash you can kill it, the backtrace doesn't help for this one cuz the crash is in Civ4 itself.
First truncate the file: $ echo '' > ~/Desktop/Civ4BTS+tid,+msxml,+variant,+relay.log Then append: $ .....Civ4BeyondSword.exe &>> ~/Desktop/Civ4BTS+tid,+msxml,+variant,+relay.log

I have used the redirects as you recommended. This is barely the limit of my poor laptop. It took over half hour to generate the logfiles (the game gets really slow with all these debug options) plus almost an hour(!) to compress them. My T7500 is starting to look aged even using the full power of 64 bit...

I also noticed that after playing some time the screen turns black, HUD is OK, no crash, I can play, but I don't see cities, terrain, troops. It happens after ending turn. The problem disappears if I use winetricks msxml3. Should I open new bug for this or would it be duplicate of this bug?

I'm not very experienced in this sort of thing, but I'd say (and this is just my opinion) it's a separate bug, on the same component (msxml3). Just one thing, how did you get the game to start? Does loading a saved game work?

@NSLW Just one thing, how did you get the game to start?
I installed in clean wineprefix and used provided shortcut to start the game. Then I choose Single Player -> Play Now!. Here, as I try to start the game with default settings, I get crash. I modify settings and the game starts.
Does loading a saved game work?
Yes it works but sometimes I get crash too. Therefore I decided to use native msxml3 and don't worry about nothing.

Yes, if you can figure out which settings cause a crash and which don't that would help a LOT. It would help us figure out which part of the xml isn't working correctly at least, which is what I need: a place to start, lol.

--- Comment #27 from Francisco Pina Martins f.pinamartins@gmail.com 2011-03-19 11:42:36 CDT --- OK, so I'm trying to find out which settings will NOT crash the game using builtin MSXML. I have found a condition that causes an early crash (great plains map, duel size) , but when run using WINEDEBUG=+tid,+msxml,+variant,+relay I cannot reproduce it. How can send you any information regarding this one? also, it does not happen with native MSXML. I will keep trying to fond conditions that do not cause any crashes and figure out what crash causing conditions have in common so I can pin-point them to you.

--- Comment #28 from Francisco Pina Martins f.pinamartins@gmail.com 2011-03-19 13:41:07 CDT --- After attempting every combination of map type/size, I found that that crash (during "setup map") is always reproducible, except for the case mentioned in my last comment where an earlier crash is caused. The log information is pretty much the same as in my last post. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. I can't find a way to reproduce it reliably. Since the crash happens during "setup map" I have tried every combination of maps possible in the game and none of them caused any sort of crash. However, one thing I have noticed is that if the game starts OK the first time, none of the subsequent "Return to main menu" -> "Start new game" cause crashes. --- Comment #51 from genstorm andreas.sturmlechner@gmail.com --- Yes, more info from people who experience this on exactly which steps it happened would be helpful. I've just gone back to using built-in msxml3/msxml3r for testing, and a first try seemed to work. It has worked in the past, but sometimes loading a savegame needed a second or third try.

--- Comment #52 from Béla Gyebrószki gyebro69@gmail.com --- Created attachment 54964 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=54964 terminal output - Wine 1.9.13
Still an issue in 1.9.13, tested with the Steam version. Native msxml3.dll works around the problem. The crash is not fully reproducible, sometimes starting a new game (or loading a saved game) works when using built-in msxml3.

--- Comment #54 from Matthew Ehrenhofler trekie96@hotmail.com --- I just tested Beyond the Sword with Wine 4.15 and this seems to have been fixed. I don't know if I'm using builtin msxm13 or not but I haven't altered any settings for the game.
