Summary: Soldat Performance Spikes Product: Wine Version: 1.1.1 Platform: Other URL: http://static.soldat.pl/downloads/soldatsetup15b.zip OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: tehstealth@yahoo.com
I have been trying the Soldat 1.5.0 Beta out, and it works as well as the 1.4 version. However there is a bug (probably in 1.4 too, but I'm reporting it for 1.5b anyway) with the weapons selection menu and sprites. Especially with the menu, Soldat lags horribly, and once you do select your weapon, everything is fine again. Also, when sprites are drawn on the screen, it also seems to spike a bit. Both instances are spitting out this, continuously:
fixme:d3d_surface:read_from_framebuffer_texture >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_ENUM (0x500) from glReadBuffer @ surface.c / 913
Whatever that is, if that were fixed, it would probably be one of the last bugs dealing with Soldat gameplay performance, as everything else is great!

You should probably state your video card and driver version. I can confirm that Soldat 1.4 suffers from performance issues, mainly when explosions occur and text is displayed confirming kills -- with a nVidia FX 5200 + 169.12, it's unplayable.

--- Comment #2 from affect afffect@gmail.com 2008-07-22 01:19:45 --- I can confirm it at least for Soldat 1.4 and Wine 1.0 and older. In multiplayer it lags horribly, especially when the weapon menu or kill message is displayed. Got NVidia FX 5200 + 100.14 (using old drivers because of some annoying bugs in the new ones, Soldat does lag with the new ones too though). I've been trying to play with lots of different Wine and Soldat settings and that didn't help.

--- Comment #3 from Brian tehstealth@yahoo.com 2008-07-22 16:59:44 --- Using the latest drivers Ubuntu has (169.something I think) with an Nvidia 8800GTS. Yes, I noticed that when you die, the respawn countdown timer flashes for every millisecond it counts. This lags a little bit too, but nothing compared to the crawling speeds of when the menu comes up.

--- Comment #8 from sado gsado92@gmail.com 2008-10-29 17:25:35 --- It seems that GeForce FX 5200 does not work well with Soldat+Wine, I've heard about same issues with that card [and also something low-budget from 6xxx series] and Soldat on Wine from many people, I've had this card in my old computer too and had performance problems too. It's definitely bug affecting this specific card and displaying text in recent versions of Soldat. Performance issues on my FX 5200 affected Soldat from 1.4.1 or .2, I don't exactly remember. It could be simply issue with newer nvidia drivers too. Before it was working nice with Soldat so it's not hardware issue or simply too weak card. Could somebody with FX5200 check how 1.4 or earlier versions work?

You would need to test with an older card.

Wine 1.1.24 Soldat 1.5 Latest Nvidia drivers
Now it's only the occasional occurrence, and I can't really pinpoint how to make it happen. However, every time you start the round, it will slow down. Once weapon is chosen though, I can die, spawn, choose weapon and blow stuff up like normal with a slowdown occurring only once in a while.

--- Comment #13 from Brian tehstealth@yahoo.com 2009-07-03 18:35:17 --- Forgot to mention, the error changed a bit, it looks like this now:
fixme:d3d:stretch_rect_fbo >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glBlitFramebuffer() @ device.c / 6523
and like I said, only happens occasionally, now it's not spitting continuously into the terminal.

--- Comment #14 from Luke Hoschke userluke@gmail.com 2009-10-31 06:36:50 --- It seems this slowdown is related to font rendering.
if I go into "c:/Soldat/Txt/weaponnames.txt" and make the file just contain blank lines, the weapon menu no longer kills the framerate, and the game is much more playable. (as long as you know what weapon is what :p)

I tried the game with the DIB engine patches; the performance issue is gone when the menu is on the screen...but all texts disappeared from the game.

--- Comment #16 from rozwell rozwell69@gmail.com 2011-06-29 17:05:15 CDT --- I've got performance spikes on wine 1.3.23 (normally ~60fps but when perf drops it's ~15) and the console is filled with many:
fixme:d3d:wined3d_buffer_preload Too many full buffer conversions, stopping converting.
The funny thing is when I press ESC (menu shows) everything is working fine for a little while.. And it seems to be connected with fonts too.

What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |merlinbuege@web.de
--- Comment #17 from merlinbuege@web.de 2012-05-31 06:48:53 CDT --- At first sorry for my bad english (I am german).
I get the same symptoms which rozwell described above when I run Soldat.
I am running Fedora 16 in 64bit edition with a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250. Previously I worked with the default nouveau graphics driver for Fedora (which has improved a lot recently) and actually Soldat ran fine, except for sometimes a sound crash and a little graphical lag. First of all because the the graphical lag (sometimes - I think above all with many players and in online mode - there where black horizontal bars and a low FPS rate (4-10 FPS) at all) I wanted to try out the proprietary NVIDIA-driver for Linux - maybe Soldat would run faster with it ... So I installed the packages kmod-nvidia and xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs (the last one in 32bit!!), but the problems with Soldat are still there ... though it run with the NVIDIA driver at all and the sound problems are gone, too.
When I run Soldat from the terminal, I get many of these two messages: "fixme:d3d:resource_check_usage Unhandled usage flags 0x8." and "fixme:d3d:wined3d_buffer_preload Too many full buffer conversions, stopping converting." (much more of the second)
And it also appears that (as rozwell described) it belongs to the text rendering or something like that. So when the weapon menu shows up or bots are chatting and messages like "you killed blabla" are shown, Soldat lags and sometimes goes under 8 FPS. And when I press ESC for the game menu and it shows up, everything goes smoothly and there is no lag ...
// Fedora 16 64-bit 3.3.7-1.fc16.x86_64 // wine version 1.5.3-1 // NVIDIA Driver Version: 295.53
Also tried different settings in the Soldat Config and in the NVIDIA X Server Settings Center (like OpenGL --> high perfomance and so on).

I've changed my laptop in the meantime and now I've got 2 graphic cards: * Intel HD Graphics 3000 (integrated in CPU) * nVidia GeForce GT 540M
On Intel Soldat works fine but performance isn't too good (not a surprise since). But on GeForce (I'm using bumblebee and optirun command to use nVidia card) this issue is still present.
Previously I was using native nVidia drivers from: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx but now because of lack of support nVidia Optimus technology in those drivers, I'm using nvidia-current package (295.53-0ubuntu1~precise~xup1).
For me it seems to be a drivers issue and if someone have time to do so, please report this issue to nVidia - they actually fix issues reported by users ;)
Running on: Ubuntu Precise 12.04 64bit

--- Comment #19 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com --- Please try again in wine 1.7.35 or newer, this may be fixed due to newer drivers and libraries.
