Bug #: 34195 Summary: Starcraft II - doesn't start since patch 2.0.10 Product: Wine Version: 1.6 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: felipe.contreras@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 45489 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=45489 Console output
Starcraft II has always worked fine for me, but since the latest patch 2.0.10, it just fails to start. I see up to the login screen, then crashes, and I'm greeted with the Blizzard error report tool.
It's either that, or the newest version of wine (1.6), those are the only two things that have changed AFAIK.

--- Comment #1 from Henri Verbeet hverbeet@gmail.com 2013-08-02 15:37:55 CDT --- For what it's worth, it still seems to work fine for me, although this isn't an entirely clean WINEPREFIX.

--- Comment #2 from Felipe Contreras felipe.contreras@gmail.com 2013-08-03 18:24:52 CDT --- Tried on v1.7, still the same.

--- Comment #3 from Felipe Contreras felipe.contreras@gmail.com 2013-08-04 05:38:39 CDT --- I tried on v1.5.31 (plus a couple of bison build fixes), still the same.

--- Comment #4 from Felipe Contreras felipe.contreras@gmail.com 2013-08-04 05:41:01 CDT --- Henri Verbeet, can you try with a clean prefix? You don't need to reinstall StarCraft II; you can run the .exe from anywhere.

You don't need to reinstall StarCraft II; you can run the .exe from anywhere.
That doesn't help at all. You need to install the application correctly for it to work correctly.
Definitely NOT major. http://bugs.winehq.org/page.cgi?id=fields.html#severity

It's either that, or the newest version of wine (1.6)
So try it in a version that worked. If it works then it's a regression. http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting

It works correctly. It has always worked correctly, both in Linux, and in Windows.

So what do you call a bug that makes a game totally unusable? More specifically, one of the most popular games of all time.

As I already said, I already did. It's not a regression, it's triggered by the latest version.

Yeah, that works as well here.
I don't see anything obvious in the log. Do you get a good backtrace from the game? There should be crash dumps under ~/StarCraft II/GameLogs/, unless you changed the desktop integration link for "My Documents".

It doesn't seem that way.

Anyway, I had the feeling the crash happened when connecting to Battle.net, and the stack trace above seems to agree with that, so I started the game without Internet access and there's no crash. The screen kept flickering to black the whole time, but there was no crash.

It works correctly. It has always worked correctly, both in Linux, and in Windows.
BTW. I tried to run the installer in a clean prefix, and after 6% of the download you can run the game, I click PLAY, and it crashes just the same.

--- Comment #10 from Felipe Contreras felipe.contreras@gmail.com 2013-08-04 23:33:34 CDT --- I found the problem; it's the latest Linux kernel; v3.10 works fine, but v3.11-rcX doesn't.
I bisected the issue:
https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=f...
So I revert that patch and there's no crash.
However, there's still the problem that the screen flicks black. It appears to happen each time I move the mouse.

Fixed upstream. https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=3...
Given how quickly the commit has been reverted, it is unlikely to have any effect in the wild.

I think that's a bit uncalled for. Arguably the way severity works in Wine's bugzilla is a bit unintuitive for some people because it's intended to be set from Wine's point of view instead of the application's. I think the issue comes up often enough to call it a common mistake, but that's not a reason to be rude about it. Quite the contrary, I'd argue.

Agreed. Suggestions on how to reduce that mistake are welcome, of course. But no need to reprimand somewhat for what was a valid bug report, albeit in the wrong place (which wasn't immediately obvious).
