checked again on Ubuntu Software Center and sure enough, the version there is very outdated.
perhapse that's one reason the VS2010 prerequisites fail to install. :P (I just want Python with informative intellisense, which VS2010 has) blah blah

why does wine create a 64bit prefix by default if 32bit is always recommended

It's only used if wine64 is built/installed, if you don't want 64-bit support, only build/install 32-bit wine.
