This seems to happen regardless of settings and first started, I think, when 1.0-rc3 was released. Basically whether in opengl or direct3d the game loads up and plays the opening scenes and shows the menu just fine but crashes when you try to start the actual game.
With a fresh install and everything in the game on the default setting, creating a new profile and starting it results in a crash after the progress bar is done loading.
Gentoo with kernel 2.6.25 and nvidia drivers 173.14.09
I've got a newer Hitman CD so even though I haven't installed any patches it comes with the latest updates.

I'll try downloading it myself and see if it behaves the same for me as in the retail version.

You go through the briefing screen after loading your profile and once the actual mission loads it segfaults. I tried just every version of wine going back to 0.9.58 with the demo and all of them crashed. I tried 0.9.61 and 1.0-rc1 with the retail version and it was still crashing though I thought I remembered it working with those versions. It's possible I had some configuration fluke that allowed it to run and that it's always been broken.

Probably what's happening in Hitman that's crashing Wine. The test case should pass on Windows, and in Wine with your patch applied.
