Summary: need for speed world launcher has trouble downloading Product: Wine Version: 1.3.19 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: dank@kegel.com
Using the recipe winetricks dotnet20 ie7 one can then install need for speed world's launcher, but the launcher has trouble downloading the game. There seem to be more than one failure mode; sometimes you get a dialog and can press "download" to retry, other times it locks up. It does eventually succeed after something like 2-3 kills+restarts and 2-3 clicks on the download error dialog + download button.

and the same dialog.
winetricks wininet reports it's already installed, presumably as part of winetricks ie7.

--- Comment #7 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2012-12-02 10:18:11 CST --- It still succeeds if you kill it when it complains and then restart enough. I had to do this four times just now, and the log showed a different problem file every time. After that, the game started fine.

The problem seems worse than it used to be; now the download usually restarts from the beginning, so retrying repeatedly doesn't help anymore?

--- Comment #14 from hanska2@luukku.com --- You need to install dotnet20. I am not sure about ie8 but I installed it via winetricks.
Also you need to set gdiplus as native.
I got a crash without setting gdiplus as native and a window that had only 2 buttons and nothing else.
Weird behaviour. I already downloaded 50-60Mb, then it complains about the connection, update button doesnt seem to do anything.
Restarting the client and the downloading started around 1.8mb.
wine 1.7.22

--- Comment #15 from Paul The Tall paulthetall@gmail.com --- Same here...I Tried all kinda things, but downloading gets stucks randomly on different places when downloading. Problem is that it starts over everytime again and doesn't continue where it left. Otherwise it wouldn't be a mayor issue but now it is a show stopper....
Please wine developers, help out! Bruno Jesus? Can you help out?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27048
--- Comment #16 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com --- I'm not sure if I can help but let's see. I can't open Dan's log from comment 9, first thing to do is to figure out if the download is made from wininet, winhttp or winsock. If you open http://static.cdn.ea.com/blackbox/u/f/NFSWO/1577/client/index.xml manually you will see a xml file with the list of files that need to be downloaded. Please attach a +wininet,+winhttp,+winsock.

I think I did this wrong. I tried to forward the output into file using >>. But only some of the info was forwarded and some other info was spamming into console.
When the error came I pressed Ctrl+c, I think you can see the ^C in the log.
So there is some timeout... Winsock spams a lot
trace:winsock:WS2_recv_base fd=122, options=0 trace:winsock:WS2_recv_base socket 0584, wsabuf 0xc550874, nbufs 1, flags 0, from (nil), fromlen -1, ovl 0xc4e00c4, func (nil)
and similar lines when everything is fine.
Tell me how to do it correctly if this doesnt help enough.

This is not full, the full was something like 2 megabytes compressed.
I used ctrl+c when the error dialogue game (mentioned here before) and took the log from the end.

--- Comment #20 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com --- Well, we are not alone: http://answers.ea.com/t5/Need-for-Speed-World/Nfs-World-Update-Problem/td-p/...
It's also reproducible in windows with unknown reasons. The thread was started in 2012 and the last person to have the problem was from June 2014.

--- Comment #21 from Paul The Tall paulthetall@gmail.com --- "It's also reproducible in windows with unknown reasons. The thread was started in 2012 and the last person to have the problem was from June 2014."
That kinda arguments are bull, because if this was a general problem EA would be overwhelmed with reactions of the problem and they would have fixed this problem straight away. In this case it was probably a firewall or virusscan or something causing it.
It might of course point to the direction of "security" which means perhaps something with winsock or advapi dll....
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27048
--- Comment #22 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com --- The problem always starts in the decompression of a file, then the program quits all other tasks. Since many other network applications work fine in wine I don't think this is caused by winsock.
The xml file from the game has a list of files with compressed size, decompressed size and hash of files. It looks like the problem happens randomly in windows and more often in wine. The game probably does this decompression and hash test without windows API. I'll try to reproduce this myself.
