Instead I see the desktop. An hl2 icon is shown in the icon-box. 4)The icon vanished after 5-10 seconds. No error window. No traceback in terminal.

Indeed the query code checked the query private data for the context, but if the query is faked, this private data was NULL. This patch makes sure it is always there and fixes the crash when GL_NV_fence is missing for me.

--- Comment #18 from Andy andyjstormont@googlemail.com 2007-10-12 05:10:13 --- I have tested the proposed patch, and I can now start HL2.
But...
It crashes after the bloke with a valve in his face appears. Something along the lines of "Engine Error".
I can also not launch HL2 from within steam.
I will upload the console output.

--- Comment #23 from tsubasa sylvain.pasquet@gmail.com 2007-10-15 15:25:11 --- For recovering source game that crashing on startup we need to following this :
You need to disable steam community things. I have a french steam client but by the way for me its : 1-Go in file menu and select the parameters. 2- Go in "In the game" tab 3- Uncheck the Enable community steam.
Restart steam and all will work like before.

--- Comment #24 from Ladislav Petruš ladislav.petrus@rt.sk 2007-10-15 15:59:24 --- I wanted to confirm previous comment, but I found out that HL2 and all other Source games that are available to me (ep1, ep2, portal) start again normally after upgrading back to wine 0.9.46 even without disabling the in-game community integration.
It may be related to a recent upgrade of the steam client & source engine caused by Valve Orange Box release. Can others confirm that source games start again normally with wine 0.9.46?

For me it works well with wine 0.9.47 and steam community disabled. But if I enable it all game ( not only source one ) crash at starting.

I can confirm disabling steam community in-game restores functionality in wine 0.97.
It also stops the window from being stuck to the bottom right of the screen for me.
I think the howto should be updated.
