Bug ID: 57557 Summary: Windows apps not longer run properly on Wine Product: Wine Version: unspecified Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: vms368@hotmail.com Distribution: ---
Created attachment 77636 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=77636 Wine terminal error messages and screenshots
Hi,
Lately, and all of a sudden, Wine does not work properly. Each time I try to run eMule, Synthesia piano app, winecfg and likely any other app under wine it opens in a most blank window, or it closes when clicking any blank button.
OS: Xubuntu 24.04.1 LTS. Wine version: wine-9.0 (Ubuntu 9.0~repack-4build3).
Yes, I have uninstalled and re-installed the currrent Wine version 9. Also I tried to install previous versions, like the 6 or the 8 (by the way, I couldn't install the previous versions properly, only the current 9). I also have used chown and chmod commands to make sure there are no permission problems, without avail.
Running these apps from the terminal it throws the error messages that I have copied and pasted in the text file that I attach you. Interestingly, all wine apps run OK if running them with sudo, but this is kinda of dangerous I've read somewhere.
I also attach you some screenshots.

--- Comment #2 from Fabian Maurer dark.shadow4@web.de --- If you ran them with sudo, maybe you messed something up? Does the issue still appear in clean WINEPREFIX?

--- Comment #3 from Vic836 vms368@hotmail.com --- AFAIK I didn't touch anything on the operating system before happening these errors. One day it happened and that's it.
I don't know how to do a clean WINEPREFIX. But this problem happens not only with one but with all programs running under wine, even with winecfg itself.

--- Comment #8 from Vic836 vms368@hotmail.com --- As I couldn't install properly past versions of Wine via repositories nor with DEBS, I have compiled Wine 8.21 and everything works OK, eMule, Synthesia, etc.
I attach you some screenshots.
Just that trying to install Synthesia 10.9 it throws an error message that Synthesia 10.9 can only be installed on a 64-bit version of Windows. But previous versions like Synthesia 10.8 which don't need to be firstly installed to be executed it work just fine.
But if I try to execute the same Windows apps with Wine 9 again, it don't work like before.

--- Comment #9 from Jactry Zeng jactry92@gmail.com --- I tested Synthesia 9.8[1] on Wine 9.0 and 10.0rc3. Both work well; I can install it and start it.
It is possibly an issue of our environment instead of a Wine bug. You can only run 64-bit programs with a 64-bit Wine.

--- Comment #10 from Vic836 vms368@hotmail.com --- Regarding Comment #2 and to run the Windows apps from a clean WINEPREFIX, if that means to remove .wine folder, yes I did it as per the Wine FAQ: https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/wine/-/wikis/FAQ#how-do-i-wipe-the-virtual-wi... Then I tried to run winecfg, execute or install the Windows apps, but still the problem persisted.

--- Comment #11 from Vic836 vms368@hotmail.com --- Thanks for your answers.
Under Wine 8.21, eMule loads, starts and runs OK.
But Synthesia 10.9 does not install (it throws the error message of that Synthesia can be only installed on a 64-bit version of Windows).
And Synthesia 10.8 loads and starts OK (no need for installation), but it does not sound anything. It says that the output it's the Built-in MIDI Synthesizer, and it's activated in Configuration, but the progress bar does not move and no sounds at all.
The Wine 8.21 I compiled it's the one I've found here: https://dl.winehq.org/wine/source/8.x/?C=S;O=D
I think it includes, both, the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions. So I have not a clue what's going on with all these persistent errors.
I would format my hard drive and make a fresh installation of Xubuntu or Kubuntu, but the case it's that everything else works just fine in my laptop.

Thanks for your answers.
But Synthesia 10.9 does not install (it throws the error message of that Synthesia can be only installed on a 64-bit version of Windows).
How about using `wine64` to run the 10.9 installer?
And Synthesia 10.8 loads and starts OK (no need for installation),
I guess this is because the 10.8 installer is a 32-bit program, you can use `file xxx.exe` to verify it.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57557
--- Comment #13 from Vic836 vms368@hotmail.com --- No, no, the Synthesia 10.8 is not an installer, it's a zip file that I extract and then run the Synthesia.exe in a terminal with wine, it just starts the program, not any installation. It works but no sound.
In Synthesia 10.9, the respective Synthesia.exe it's an installer... Then it pops up the error message that the program can be only installed on 64-bit versions of Windows.
I tried to install Synthesia 10.9 with wine64, and it tells that wine64 was not found.
I attach you the respective terminal outputs.

You are using a Wine without 64-bit support, so the 64-bit 10.9 installer won't work. Please try to install a Wine with 64-bit support, or use a 32-bit installer instead: https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/wine/-/wikis/Debian-Ubuntu

--- Comment #16 from Vic836 vms368@hotmail.com --- Ok, I will keep in mind that, thank you.
But, there are 2 problems here. One, that Wine 9 opens the programs but without names in the buttons, etc., also eMule further throws an error message then closes when clicking a button or Synthesia opens and plays sound but without any names or letters whatsoever.
The another problem is why Synthesia opens and runs OK but does not sound in Wine 8.21 (although it does sound in Wine 9 even without names everywhere in the program).
The initial and main problem, it's that Wine 9 no longer works properly on my computer and to my knowledge I didn't anything for that to happen.
So, once again, I have removed the .wine directory (and the .Playonlinux directory). Then I just uninstalled Wine 8.21 and reinstalled Wine 9 (wine and wine64). And, the same thing happens as above quoted, the apps opens without any names, even winecfg opens a blank window.
I don't know what else to do, except to remove Wine and use aMule for Linux instead of eMule (for once, aMule works OK and stably currently).
And to use Windows 11 (I have dual boot on the laptop) to play Synthesia (wait, that Synthesia does not work properly on Windows 11 and distorts sounds even when checking backwards compatibility.. LOL).

--- Comment #17 from Vic836 vms368@hotmail.com --- I've tried wine 9 using a live usb stick with Xubuntu 24.04, in the same laptop.
The first time I executed winecfg then tried to install Synthesia and eMule during the live session, things went wrong as I couldn't end installing them and the wine menu entries didn't pop up, some errors were thrown by the terminal. But I removed .wine folder and next time it everything went OK running winecfg then installing and running both apps smoothly and the wine menu entries did appear OK.
So definitively this is not a problem with wine 9, but likely something is now "broken" on my operating system. Of course, I don't have a clue what could it be, as one day wine just stopped working properly here as I described in my previous comments, I didn't touch anything before that (so I thought perhaps it was due to an upgrade) and it can't be solved by removing .wine folder nor by uninstalling then reinstalling wine and these errors insistently occur even by using an AppImage version of wine. But it's pretty clear that any wine version won't work on my OS currently installed, and that it will work flawlessly again when I decide to format the partition and reinstall some Linux distro.
Regarding aMule for Linux it works just fine currently, but I tried several times along the past years on several Linux distros, and most times it was very unstable, closing unexpectedly or disappearing the names in the menus and in the buttons, etc. This is why I finally switched to use eMule with wine.
On the other hand, I also have tried to re-install Synthesia on Windows 11 and this time it also worked OK, without distorting sound nor needing to activate backwards compatibility. Also, I don't know why.
Computers have goblins, sometimes.
