Summary: Wine shouldn't change the gamma value Product: Wine Version: 1.3.8 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: [email protected] ReportedBy: [email protected]
Some games (like Shaya http://shaiya.aeriagames.com/ ) can change the gamma value (I don't know how exactly, but it have the same effect as using the xgamma command in Linux). When you play in windowed mode (or with dual-screen) it is really annoying (and causing eyestrain) when the gamma value is too high. There should be an option to disable the possibility for games and software to change the gamma value.

--- Comment #1 from Dan Kegel [email protected] 2010-12-05 10:38:11 CST --- You can restore gamma with /usr/bin/xgamma after the game is done.
Does the game properly restore gamma when it's done?

Do these games behave same same under Windows?

I have no way of trying it under Windows.

Is this still an issue in wine version 1.6-rc3 or higher or is this to be closed as abandoned ?

--- Comment #6 from Aaron Paden [email protected] --- Still an issue as of 2.14. I can also confirm that the display settings are restored on real Windows.

--- Comment #7 from [email protected] --- I'm not sure if it is excessive gamma or brightnesss but Enclave messes up display on Linux and fails to restore setting on quit. It's steam linux version, which uses wine or winelib.

--- Comment #8 from Jason Oliveira [email protected] --- This is happening with The Sims 3 (and all expansions). Gamma goes out of whack as soon as the game starts. Gamma setting will remain long after app is closed (unless you run xgamma or go into KDE's gamma settings).
There is a workaround: Install redshift (including the GNOME/KDE applet) and it will notice the change, and force gamma to adjust. This works for the most part, but for some reason gamma is reset during loading screens, so expect some "flashing" between ultra-bright gamma and normal settings as the game and redshift fight with each other for dominance.

--- Comment #9 from mirh [email protected] --- UseXVidMode is the registry knob to block this behaviour. Alternatively it shouldn't happen if wine is run through XWayland.
