Does 'winetricks -q comctl32' help?
No. The program now gives the following error on launch:
tony@ubuntu:~$ fixme:actctx:parse_depend_manifests Could not find dependent assembly L"Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls" (6.0.0.0)
and dies silently when I try Import/All Programs

Does 'winetricks -q comctl32' help?
I notice that you have flagged comdlg32 as the offending component.

Austin: did you really mean:

I notice that you have flagged comdlg32 as the offending component.
The backtrace seemed to imply that, but your terminal output makes comctl32 look more likely. I shouldn't have set it without verifying the problem, my bad.
So yes, please try native comctl32.

I think I have already done this and that all the traces and debugs are already attached.
It seems to me that this bug is very closely linked with bug number 28692, because when I use the File/Open dialogue bug 28692 shows up first and then I carry and list all files - pick one and then the crash occurs when I try to open it.

I don't get a crash, but the dialog doesn't see a pcg file, even when it's in the directory. I used one from http://tritonhaven.com/downloads/pcgs.html

Yes, that's another issue with Wine, the default file type filter is not correctly applied when creating the file open dialog. In order to open the PCG-file you have to select "All files (*.PCG)" from the drop down menu, even though it's already selected. This works fine on Windows without the need to re-select the file type.

Yes, that's another issue with Wine
To be precise: it's files as bug 28692.
