Placing native d3dx9_36.dll (or d3dx9_31) in the game directory works around the crash when entering planetary battle mode. I tested with SR2:Reboot, Wine 1.5.5.

Looks like the game needs DXT1 compressor, it tries to create DXT1 (31545844) texture from R8G8B8 (0x14).
Please try the game with the attached patch. It's a hack which returns D3D_OK when surface cannot be loaded. If the game starts with this patch, some textures are expected to be black. Could you also get me +d3dx log with the patch?

With your patch the game indeed loads planetary battles without crashing, but some of the textures (notably terrain textures) are black.

After selecting planetary battle I see a lot of "fixme:d3dx:D3DXLoadSurfaceFromMemory Unhandled filter 0x5." messages, loading progress bar goes up to 100% and then I see the small dialog with the following content:
Exception: Call stack: [unavailable in release] File=......\LIB\Base\Src\CWStr.cpp Line=601
Clicking OK in this dialog closes the game.

I think so, yes, but my intention was to check if this is the same or some different regression before next release. Can this be reproduced on some demo? I could find "Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators Demo" so far.
