Summary: Quicktime 2 installer exits silently Product: Wine Version: 1.1.20 Platform: PC URL: http://www.oldversion.com/download/quicktime212.exe OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: kennybobs@o2.co.uk
Created an attachment (id=20783) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=20783) Wine 1.1.20 +relay +seh +tid (last 3MB)
Installer from Quicktime 2.1.2 exits silently.
Apparently the only available version is from oldversion.com However, I also have a copy that comes with another app that installs fine. It *might* have something to do with the lzexpand DLLs.
Failing version prints these lines and then exits: trace:loaddll:NE_FreeModule Unloaded module "LZEXPAND.DLL" : builtin trace:loaddll:free_modref Unloaded module L"C:\windows\system32\lzexpand.dll16" : builtin trace:loaddll:free_modref Unloaded module L"C:\windows\system32\lz32.dll" : builtin
Whereas the working version prints this line and continues: trace:loaddll:free_modref Unloaded module L"C:\windows\system32\lz32.dll" : builtin
I can upload the working version too if needed.

When launching qt16.exe (the installer) it make a "flash" of a full screen window and later closes. Launching it with winedbg produces the same effect without any crash.
It's also being launched by "Connections: a mind's game" installer, and being a requeriment for playing videos inside the game, obviusly it doesn't work also. Related to the game, it has also problems on Windows XP, that seems to be fixed installing this version of Apple Quicktime decoder.

--- Comment #10 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
confirming.
From a quick glance at trace log it seems some dialog creation fails.
Kind of expected because the resource (HGLOBAL) was freed before.

There is no obvious error path that could explain why the handle is freed beforehand. I quickly hacked krnl386.exe16 to pin the reference count of resources and it made the installer go further: new wizard dialog, started inventory of drive, copying etc. Granted, that's definitely not the right thing to do.
Unfortunately there are not many options when it comes to tools for investigating win16 (NE) garbage.

--- Comment #17 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
I've found a site with lots of QuickTime installers (MAC and Windows ones):
https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/quicktime-2
Internet Archive:
https://archive.org/details/Macintosh_Garden_Apps_Collection_Q
The 16-bit Windows installers are prefixed with QT16xxxx, the 32-bit ones with QT32xxxx.
I've refined the summary line to be more explicit even though keywords contain 'win16'. The 32-bit QuickTime 2.x installers work as expected.

When launching quicktime203.exe (installer link appdb.winehq) it make a "flash" of a full screen window and later closes.
BUT if you doble-click the installer like a crazy its open and show the quick time logo and a alert windows: "Disk space error. The install program needs approximately 2.5MB on any drive for temporary files in addition to 2.5MB on the Windows drive for the permanent runtime files"
Same thing if crate a bat file (qt.bat) with: start quicktime203 quicktime203
With the bat file the installer always start. And show the disk space error. I believe that the space error is not related to the error starting the installer, the latter seems to be a problem of freed resources (as Anastasius Focht points out) that is mitigated by running two instances of the installer simultaneously
