Bug ID: 37416 Summary: The Sims 3: Display locks when running in window, uses 100% cpu Product: Wine Version: 1.7.29 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: opengl Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: wine@zootal.com Distribution: ---
When running windowed, after a while (usually 5 minutes or less, but sometimes it will run for a few hours), the display will stop updating. Sound and music will continue, and clicking on the screen sometimes gives a sound as if the game were still running. One core will be running at 100%, ts3w.exe. The display will be frozen, and it will not recover.
The console will display this message over and over again:
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7dace6a0 "opengl.c: context_section" wait timed out in thread 0051, blocked by 002e, retrying (60 sec)
Once this occurs, you have to kill the wine processes.
This has occurred with the last several wine builds, and still exists in 1.7.29.
I have observed this with Slackware 14.1, both 32 bit and 64 bit, on different machines. I'm using an nvidia 660 video card, and it has occured with both the current drivers as of this writing, and the last couple of version of nVidia drivers.
This does not happen if running full screen.
Steps to reproduce: 1) Run Sims 3. In options, set the display to Windows mode. 2) Load a saved game, or start a new one. Wait a while.

--- Comment #1 from winetest@luukku.com --- That can be a bit difficult to debug. And even harder without owning the game. Can you retest against wine 1.8, 1.9 or 2.0 series?
The higher the number the better.

--- Comment #2 from wine@zootal.com wine@zootal.com --- It's been over two years since I posted this bug. It stopped happening for a long time, and I believe it was fixed in Wine 1.8.x, most likely as a side effect of something else being fixed.
I got it to do it just once, and once only, in the last year, and I've used just about version of wine since 1.7.x, currently I'm on 2.0-rc3 I think.
TBH it's very possible this is a problem with Sims, not Wine. I'm not sure if there is any value in keeping this bug report open because it hardly happens anymore, and I can no longer reproduce it on a regular basis. Even if you owned the game, you could play for hours and hours and never have it happen. If no one objects, I vote we close this as either fixed or not reproducible.

--- Comment #3 from wine@zootal.com wine@zootal.com --- I set this to resolved because it stopped happening a while ago and apologies for not closing this sooner. With Wine 1.7.x, it happened ever bloody 30 minutes or less and was really aggravating. It stopped with Wine 1.8 or so, and I've only seen it ONCE in the last year, and that just isn't enough to justify keeping this bug report open.
I can no longer duplicate this. It was either fixed in Wine, fixed in the Sims, fixed by the video driver makers, or maybe the moon is no longer in the right phase? Whatever the reason, for all practical purposes this no longer happens.

--- Comment #4 from winetest@luukku.com --- If you have other bugs open, it would help a lot if you could check them. Also if you don't have but you have issues with other programs and if you could open bug reports that would help too.
