Bug #: 31186 Summary: Star Wars: The Old Republic: Launcher display incorrectly, can't launch game Product: Wine Version: 1.5.8 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: drmccoy@drmccoy.de Classification: Unclassified
Since the latest update on July 10 2012, the launcher of Star Wars: The Old Republic displays wrongly, making it unusable so that the game can not be started.
It appears that the launcher is drawn at an incorrect offset (you can still see its top-left-ish corner in the bottom-right corner of the area the launcher is normally shown.
This happens in both wine 1.5.8 patched with the fix for bug 29168, as well as a stock wine 1.4-rc1.
Default debug output wine shows:

--- Comment #1 from Sven Hesse drmccoy@drmccoy.de 2012-07-10 11:00:57 CDT --- NOTE: The launcher is useable for me when I set the wine desktop resolution to 1280x800 or a less height. You need to click on the new "Environment" options, but the rest can gotten around by keyboard only (type password, press enter, click SWTOR, press enter, wait for a few seconds for the launcher to notice that no new update is needed, press enter).

This is a hack to add in a custom resolution to Wine. I personally like to use a non-standard 1820x1024 resolution that I used to get with the wine desktop mode that was taken away from me by the workaround to this bug.

Can I provide any logs, testing, etc, to facilitate the diagnosis of this bug?

Creating a virtual desktop size of 1000x615 to launch the game in seems to fix the problem. The game can later be set to run at a different resolution with no problems.
wine explorer /desktop=SW:TOR,1000x615 launcher.exe
Thanks for posting this. I was about to figure out the resolution by trial and error, but 1000x615 works great. I haven't tested gameplay yet because I simply started the installation process. It was too hard for me to figure out how to accept the TOS without seeing what I was doing.
Using Unity in Ubuntu, I noticed that if you clicked on the docked icon for Wine, the game splash screen would appear when it shrunk that program's window. I was able to click on that to make sure I typed in my login credentials correctly, but it wasn't good enough to fill out the TOS pages. Thanks again for the resolution to use since it's easy.

--- Comment #8 from StewVed stewved@gmail.com 2013-07-18 13:35:21 CDT --- This bug is still here for everyone playing Star Wars: The Old Republic even using the latest Wine (1.6 RC5) - How come this has not even been confirmed by someone who has permission to confirm it?
Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit using env WINEARCH=win32 because the game needs it, along with: winetricks vcrun2008 d3dx9 msls31 Also the swtor_fix.exe 'patch' thing for Bug #29168
my launcher to run the game - using xrandr to change the resolution to workaround this Bug (#31186) and also put the password directly into the clipboard on loading the launcher :D (Needs xsel installed) --------------------------- #!/bin/bash cd ~/wines && env WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/wines/swtor wine "swtor_fix.exe" & echo -n 'YourPasswordHere' | xsel -i -b & xrandr -s 800x600 cd 'Where You installed the game' && env WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/wines/swtor wine launcher.exe xrandr -s 1280x1024 wait
killall swtor_fix.exe -----------------------------
Download the game for free from http://www.swtor.com/ - so anyone can test this.

--- Comment #9 from StewVed stewved@gmail.com 2013-08-13 10:02:32 CDT --- NICE! it appears that the launcher now correctly displays (Wine 1.6) though it is jerky to move about and moves to the top-left of the screen before it dissappears when minimising.
In addition, I had to alt-tab to the launcher as clicking on the icon in my launcher to bring it back up failed (Ubuntu 13.04 launcher)
Wohoo! this means I can comment out my xrandr commands in my launcher script :D
