Bug #: 32250 Summary: perfect world international errors out on startup after Sirens of War expansion Product: Wine Version: 1.5.17 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: andrewfulrich@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 42555 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=42555 the line from the debug output containing character codes for what I'm assuming are Chinese characters
This was running fine until I was forced to update to the Sirens of War expansion. Now, when I try to start it up, it immediately gives me a scrambled error message box. I tried running wine with WINEDEBUG=+relay,+msgbox, but got a 1.9 GB output file. After searching through it, I found the messagebox output before it's incorrectly parsed for display (see attached "messageBoxLine.txt). I assume these characters are supposed to be parsed as Chinese characters, so maybe someone can do that and figure out what the message is?

--- Comment #2 from Andrew Ulrich andrewfulrich@gmail.com 2012-11-19 12:12:01 CST --- To clarify, this error comes when running elementclient.exe. You can get this error by running elementcline.exe directly or through the launcher. The results are the same.

--- Comment #3 from Andrew Ulrich andrewfulrich@gmail.com 2012-11-19 12:27:34 CST --- I just found a thread on the pwi forum that says at least one person has gotten it to work with 1.5.17: http://pwi-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=1519961
I tried following her suggestions of installing ie8 and running with the LC_TYPE="en_US", but it gave me the same error on startup.

--- Comment #4 from Winderly mississua@hotmail.com 2013-03-14 09:50:54 CDT --- I copied a fully verified game directory from a windows machine. elementclient.exe still fails to find some files which have chinese names. i tried the (LC_TYPE="en_US") or chinese environment tricks but the result is the same.

--- Comment #5 from K1773R K1773R@darkgamex.ch 2013-03-14 09:55:19 CDT --- this is not a fault of wine.
you have to be in the folder element if you want to start elementclient.exe or in the folder patcher if you want to start the patcher itself.

--- Comment #6 from Winderly mississua@hotmail.com 2013-03-15 02:01:13 CDT --- Oh yes we sure didn't think about that, thanks for your insightful help. Of course i'm running it's own folder !

--- Comment #7 from Winderly mississua@hotmail.com 2013-03-15 02:13:59 CDT --- Sorry about my previous comment, i want so much to play the game... I thought it was obvious that if we know how to set environment languages we also know how to run an app from a terminal opened in the app directory.

This, I believe, is the core of the problem. There is something going wrong with chinese file names.
With Wine 1.2.3, the problem does not exist, and I think it appeared some time early in the 1.3 series of Wine, and has been there ever since. I wish I knew why only very few people have it.
(Before the Rising Call update to PWI, I was able to use Wine 1.5.30 to run only patcher.exe, and then switch to Wine 1.2.3 to run the game itself. That does not work with Rising Call, as elementclient.exe will start patcher.exe instead. Patcher on 1.2.3 will just deadlock, and elementclient.exe on anything else than 1.2.3 does not work. This bug report is one of the "does not work" cases, and is what I currently get.)
LC_CTYPE seems to have some effect. With Wine 1.6_rc2, LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8", the patcher can verify the game apparently ok, but the game won't run, with the problem in this report. I changed LC_CTYPE="zh_CN.UTF-8", and suddenly verify started to take ages: <10% progress in a few hours, it is apparently downloading every single game file from the server. I changed LC_CTYPE back, and verify is still taking ages, as if temporarily having it chinese totally broke something.
*sigh* Too many variables at play here: wine version and build options, locale, stuff installed via winetricks... this is approaching voodoo. And then some people had no problems. I'm giving up once again.

--- Comment #10 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for over a year. Is this still an issue in current (1.7.37 or newer) wine? If so, please attach the terminal output in 1.7.37 (see http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log).

--- Comment #11 from Pekka Paalanen pq@iki.fi --- Well, here is one anecdotal test FWIW:
As of 2015-04-11 and with Wine 1.7.39 (Gentoo-packaged), Perfect World International is able to run enough of Arc and Patcher to update an old installation of the game to the current version if you try enough times and don't touch the computer at all while it processes. Then, if I disable d3d11 DLL, I can run the actual game, log in, and interact in the game world.
However, the old bug of "almost all icons are question marks" is still present for me, though that is not a topic for this bug report.

It's too early to assume dx11 working. Can considered fixed/worksforme maybe, but what actually fixed it? Game update or wine? The other replies are so old that they dont have much of value anymore.

--- Comment #13 from Pekka Paalanen pq@iki.fi --- So I tried PWI again today, Nov 28, 2015, using Wine 1.7.55 as packaged by Gentoo.
Arc is able to log in, Patcher is able to upgrade PWI, and if I start the game directly with 'wine start elementclient.exe startbypatcher', I can log in and interact in the game world. Most icons in the game are still question marks, which severely hinders playability. I suppose you can count that as working then. I do have d3d11 set to "Disable" in winecfg DLL overrides.
I have no idea what might have fixed it. Everything changes all the time, and I test maybe twice a year. The only thing that does not change is my hardware which has been the same since 2010.
One hypothesis I recall having few years ago was the game aborting if certain data files were not found, and the chinese character issue might trigger that. I'm pretty sure the chinese character issue is responsible for the question mark icons. The game may have changed, the files may have changed...
I believe the fundamental problem with this game are the chinese file names, as explained before. I suppose that is off-topic for this bug report, judging from the original description, so I suppose one could close this report as WORKSFORME.

I would close this bug report. There isnt too much activity. The question mark issue should have its own bug report. I think there is such a bug but I don't know if it is for this specific game title in question.
