Summary: Regression in directx, movies not playing in The Neverhood Product: Wine Version: 1.2-rc3 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: the_q123@hotmail.com
This bug was reported and resolved several versions back. In The Neverhood (1.0), when audio is enabled videos will not play or play very slowly and the game uses almost 100% of the CPU. If audio is disabled or muted the game plays just fine as do videos. I'll follow this up with a post linking to the old bug and later some logs etc. (posting from cellular)
The Neverhood works best in Windows 95 mode and I am using the ALSA sound module. It was designed for DirectX 3.0, which it automatically installs if it cannot find a suitable version.

--- Comment #2 from the_q123@hotmail.com 2010-06-19 22:05:15 --- Pre-regression bug: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16961 The symptoms are awfully similar. It is also possible this bug may also affect other old DirectX games, as was suspected with the original bug. Still posting from cell, but on the way home. Will follow up with proper regression test, logs, etc.

It works like a charm, here is a proof. Maybe something bad in your configuration?

Are you using hardware acceleration for sound? I've gotten the game to work properly if I disable this feature, but it breaks/slows down other programs.

Yes.

Well, then you can use Wine bottles, you won't need to brak other programs. Use wibom (http://wibom.sourceforge.net/), import your .wine directory and clone it. Then you can configure one bottle to use hardware acceleration for sound (and uninstall The Neverhood from it), and second bottle without hardware acceleration (and uninstall other programs but The Neverhood).
