Summary: Strong Bad's Cool Game only shows black screen Product: Wine Version: 1.1.16 Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: VincentBeers@gmail.com
I haven't played the game Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People in a few months, but last time I tried playing it the game worked (after getting a native d3dx9_36.dll). Since then this specific DLL has been implemented into Wine itself, apparently. In 1.1.16 I tried rerunning the game and now two new problems (regressions) appeared (I'm making two bug entries).
The first problem is this: when running the game, NO graphics show, I only see a completely black screen. Wine continuously prints out messages like this in the terminal:
fixme:d3d_draw:drawStridedFast >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glDrawElements @ drawprim.c / 276
To prove that the game DOES actually run: I'm hearing sound and music. I use an integrated Intel chipset (Eee PC) and run XUbuntu Intrepid.

It seems to work fine on my PC with ATI Xpress 1100 chipset using free drivers (it works even though the free drivers only mostly have 2D acceleration!). I will test it on my NVidia and Intel computers later to see if it works as well there.
Instead, other problems started popping up, probably requiring their own bug reports: 1. There is no text visible. For example, the main menu has 3D models of the main characters on the right, menu buttons... everything but the text that's supposed to go inside the buttons. The terminal keeps outputting the following lines at this point:
fixme:d3d:debug_d3dformat Unrecognized 909200449 (as fourcc: AL16) WINED3DFORMAT! fixme:d3d:getFormatDescEntry Can't find format unrecognized(909200449) in the format lookup table fixme:d3d:debug_d3dformat Unrecognized 909201952 (as fourcc: R16) WINED3DFORMAT! fixme:d3d:getFormatDescEntry Can't find format unrecognized(909201952) in the format lookup table
2. Using Wine's d3dx9_36.dll results in the following error before aborting:
wine: Call from 0x7b844673 to unimplemented function d3dx9_36.dll.D3DXAssembleShader, aborting

- There is no text visible.
File a new bug report IFF one is not already open.
- Using Wine's d3dx9_36.dll results in the following error before aborting:
wine: Call from 0x7b844673 to unimplemented function d3dx9_36.dll.D3DXAssembleShader, aborting
That is Bug 12020.
Does the original problem persist? Are you sure the eeepc can handle the game?

--- Comment #4 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2010-12-20 22:15:22 CST --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for a year. Is this still an issue in current (1.3.9 or newer) wine?

--- Comment #5 from butraxz@gmail.com 2013-06-09 11:17:47 CDT --- This has not been updated for over 900 days.
Is this still an issue in 1.6-rc1 or higher or is this abandoned ?

Works great with native d3dx9_36.dll on wine-1.6-rc1, so fixed.
I'll file a new bug for the problem without native d3dx9_36.
And might I say I liked the opening quite a bit.
