I'm using Nvidia GT8800 myself... and it doesn't seem like Nvidia issue, since on login screen you actually see a 3D battle going on... so that works... just when server choice / pin mode should popup it just crashes ...

Hey! Thanks for post and I got a few mails from other people complaining the about the same issue. It seems that on some installations of Ubuntu 10.04 works fine with no problems... only some computers seem to be affected.
I have never compiled wine myself, but I may try it - even though I still have little expirience with compiling since the launchpad.net usually has quite good prepacked installations.
Also about the error, I googled a bit and there's quite a few games that actually result with same error under wine (this one: fixme:mountmgr:harddisk_ioctl unsupported ioctl 74080 ), there's some workaround to install different components with either winetricks or wine-doors, but none of those worked for me, even with some native components...
If anyone finds something related to this error that I might have missed, I'd be glad for any other help before trying to compile wine myself (it would be also very user unfriendly).

Forgive me, I do not know what "Git" means, but Wine is version 1.2rc7 if that answers your question.
I noticed quite a few bug reports for diffrent games containing this:
err:ole:CoInitializeEx Attempt to change threading model of this apartment from apartment threaded to multi-threaded fixme:mountmgr:harddisk_ioctl unsupported ioctl 74080
diffrent people, diffrent games - the error starts same way. As far as I can see it only happens on some systems - no idea why, someone should maybe explain what the error of changing threading model actually means for Wine.
So far I have not found any workaround for the error and it still persists with all the patching (including Wine and Ubuntu patches in my case).

All are NVIDIA, I'm about to test a laptop with Intel x1300 graphics... but it is not graphics card problem, as I can see battle going on - the problem in my opinion is when a client does check if it needs PIN mode (if ran from another computer) or not, so it must be some function call, which works on some machines but not others.

Hi Thomas,
the problem I had, was related to a missing driver for my Wireless card installed in the system. I was not using this wireless card, but Atlantica seems to be checking something from the network cards at login, and since the driver part was missing, it crashed with an error.
Try to remove all but 1 network card from the system, and try again. Maybe it will help, if installing the correct driver package doesn't work.

Uhh I cannot test the fix as I can't built wine by myself atm :-/ But I trust Thomas did good testing, he's been active on the bug and quite knowledgeable :)
But idea for patch IS good. I'm pretty sure its related to network cards / IP addresses or some unique computer info. Atlantica checks whether it was run from same computer and IP address. If any of this changes - then you are prompted with PIN pad for secondary password. And even when the PIN pad should not be displayed - because i ran Atlantica from windows, and its assumed same computer and IP (tested this on my laptop where Atlantica works under wine) - the game crashes at exactly that point (gathering info whether it is same computer/IP or should it display PIN pad for secondary password).

What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |arek75@gmail.com
--- Comment #48 from James arek75@gmail.com 2012-06-07 18:06:45 CDT --- As of Wine 1.5.5, this bug still seems to exist for me, but instead of crashing, wine HANGS at that point. I don't remember if the debugger came up for me or not, as it's been a couple of days since it happened, tho I'm leaning towards not, since I didn't attempt to get a backtrace from it.
What I can say is that this doesn't seem to be related to having multiple network adapters, since I only have one such adapter in this computer. It may, however, be related to having hardware in your computer for which a driver is not present, since I do have both onboard video and a discrete video card installed, and do not have a driver active for the onboard video (nor do I know how to activate the driver to test with, or even if my mobo will allow the onboard video to be used with a discrete card installed).
My guess is that the way Atlatica is inventorying hardware to determine if the pin is needed is causing wine to choke, tho it may be in the process now of being fixed. I hope it does get fixed soon, since I really want to try Atlantica. :-)

--- Comment #49 from fifogigo@gmail.com 2012-10-20 03:24:57 CDT --- I don't know if this is helpful, but I have been experiencing this same login issue, I've tried several distributions of Linux, I had it at one point working on Gentoo which is what I am now using, but I have also tried Ubuntu 12.04, Kubuntu 12.04.1, Slackware 14, and a couple others I can't recall off the top of my head, I was running Wine 1.5.15 on all of them (though I did try several other versions) and this issue kept occurring. What I tried then is booting into Windows 7 (which I never deleted) and tried logging into the game and it visually did almost the same thing with the exception of a "secondary password" dialog that never showed up in wine. As I said, I don't know if this is useful, if not I'm sure you can delete my rambling, but that may be what is causing this as it seems as if you login from a different computer it will show that dialog.

Actually I got it working, though in an odd way. Basically it does seem to be something about the secondary password, once I fully logged in on a windows box then wine then responded correctly, even showing that secondary pin dialog.

--- Comment #51 from tejc teihoo@gmail.com 2012-10-22 13:05:16 CDT --- I'm really not sure how you got it to work. I still dual boot windows, and it doesn't work - cause its same computer and same IP. I'm pretty sure its a wine bug, specific to some hardware. As I see it, either I'll wait till I stop playing AO, or they finally fix the bug.
Wine forums are full of this bugs, so I assume no one ever got to fixing them.

--- Comment #52 from fifogigo@gmail.com 2012-10-22 13:33:57 CDT --- Actually I have to amend what I said, it worked 1 time, and I got it working by using a VM to login and logout. After that it showed that secondary pin screen once. So at least to me it looks like the issue is in the part of the code that displays the secondary pin dialog. And i've been looking, it does seem that no one (that is actually able to figure this out) is really is interested in getting this to work. Oh well, I did try.

--- Comment #54 from James arek75@gmail.com 2012-12-26 16:48:28 CST --- I now have a different computer than I had when I last posted in here, and as of wine 1.5.19 was able to get the pin creation dialog to show up (yes, creation, not the entry dialog, which works, according to other posts). Unfortunately 1.5.19 has a different issue, and I'm now running Atlantica (using PoL) on 1.5.12 (also has issues, but is playable - silver). I'm gonna post a new compatibility report on 1.5.20 once it finishes installing.
Note that this is simply a WORKSFORME report, this bug may or may not still exist (this computer doesn't have the same "cloned hardware" in it my old one did). Someone who still had the problem last time they tested and hasn't changed their hardware since should test with a new account.

--- Comment #55 from Quick prisleav@gmail.com 2013-09-06 13:33:00 CDT --- since i couldn't play the game for about one week and i keept trying different wine versions i can tell you guys my story .. game keept on crashing after entering login over and over ... seems that is due to my router so it isn;t a wine bug it's due to the way youre address is routed. This is my 2 cents .. not a solution .. maybe a brainiac could focus and solve this matter.

I don't think that is accurate, I have a system that I dual boot on and it works with no problem on windows but not on wine, I am also able to run it on a windows vm so i'm pretty sure it's not a problem with the router. As to what it is I honestly don't know, i've given up trying to play it in wine which is kinda sad as i'd rather move completely to linux, but too many games require things which still don't work (and in some cases will never work) in wine.

I'm playing this game for allmost 2 years using ubuntu ... but a few days ago i had to connect the router to have a wireless connection in house since i did that i couldn't get past the login screen, i have a DSL connection so after a few days of not working i pluged back the wire straight into desktop .. and i'm back playing ... same configuration same versions. I think Juan Lang got the patch for this but as far as i know patching means recompiling wine .. and i'm not trying that again on 64 bit.

I haven't tested it in a while. I'll setup a new ubuntu 14.04 when it's released today and see if the problem still exist.

--- Comment #60 from Lee Forest lee8oi@gmail.com --- It IS still a problem. Even on 1.7.19. I'm in Ubuntu 14.04. Game hangs after entering login details and clicking 'login'. I installed Firefox in the wine prefix and logged into the website. clicking 'Play' brought up a different launcher but it gives me a popup saying Atlantica is down for maintainence or that I'm having network problems/etc.

--- Comment #61 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
I can't reproduce the login crash with an up-to-date client, the game works fine for me.
After login, the authentication scheme told me to create a second (4-digit) password.
I created a new character and joined some server.

It doesn't hang. Just look at the messages. It tells you the client is out of date hence you need the launcher to update it before.

See bug 36830 for the glory details ... stupid code that relies on Windows internal behaviour/impl (can be worked around with 'winetricks -q wininet').
They probably never noticed this because it just "worked".
