Summary: Civilization IV beyond the sword crashing at startup Product: Wine Version: 1.1.23 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: critical Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: zipu92@hotmail.com
Civilization IV beyond the sword is crashing at startup after message display "Init XML(cached)" For me it looks like a regression as I have just shifted from wine 1.1.22 to 1.1.23 and it worked fine before my Ubuntu upgrade
I am currently compiling wine to try to do some regression tests as you indicate on the site. I already post the description to see if somebody else has the same problem

--- Comment #1 from zipu92@hotmail.com 2009-06-09 14:57:30 --- Hi again
I am afraid my machine would be too slow for regression tests as compilation takes 40 minutes. I hoped subsequent compilations would be faster but it does not seem to.

It should not be official 1.1.23 traces but traces generated during regression check process. I hope they should look the same

--- Comment #3 from zipu92@hotmail.com 2009-06-09 16:10:15 --- I finally succeeded in finishing regression tests. Unfortunately it gave nothing it did not converge. I think I have to investigate further about what is wrong, and maybe re-install my wine environment

--- Comment #4 from Dmitry Timoshkov dmitry@codeweavers.com 2009-06-09 23:15:30 --- Is there any reason you've installed native msxml3? Also do 'cd' to the app's directory before running it with Wine.

Is there any reason you've installed native msxml3? Also do 'cd' to the app's directory before running it with Wine.
Hello Dmitry What I did is: * installing wine * performed some winetricks required by the game. I had a look back on the app page: I should have followed the line Had to use certain winetricks. msxml3, dotnet11, corefonts, plus certain directx dll files.
all worked fine until this Ubuntu uupdate. Thank you for your suggestion running program from application directory. I did it from wine directory. It does not work, but with regression test process, I do not know at all which compiled version I have
I will re-test it later, after work
Thank you for your help

Finally I decided to re-install all
I have not finished yet, I will continue next week

--- Comment #8 from Ville Aakko ville.aakko@gmail.com 2009-06-17 05:13:27 --- Hi,
I can confirm this bug in Civilization IV 1-DVD version (just plain Civ IV, no expansions). The ouput I get is very similar to the one pasted here, and also the bug description matches. The last working version seems to be 1.1.21 (not 1.1.22, but maybe the original reporter upgraded straight from 1.1.21 to .23 but tought he was upgrading from .22?). Well, at least it doesn't work in 1.1.23 here.
I might help in regression testing, since I've done that before and I've got a reasonably fast machine to compile. But I'll be away until next week, so I won't be able to do it until then.

--- Comment #9 from Andreas Schneider spam@mrplanlos.de 2009-07-05 12:53:12 --- I just have a mobile system, so this would take much time and I never tried a regression test. Before I start, how much time do I have to spend (I'm asking 'cause I have to go to work and also need my system for working).

Depends on your system specs/how many versions you need to compile. Using ccache helps quite a bit. You don't have to be there when it's compiling, so you can start the regression test, go watch TV, then come back, test, repeat.

--- Comment #11 from Andreas Schneider spam@mrplanlos.de 2009-07-06 06:10:49 --- ok, I'll give it a try, I think I will start today or tomorrow.
I'm not sure which version was the last working version. For me the last working version was 1.1.19 pre compiled version for opensuse (from the wine repository), but it sounds like later versions (1.1.21) were working too. I got several binary packages of wine for my opensuse system, I'll start testing which version was working, but I'm really sure that the last one was 1.1.19.
Then after downloading the current wine sources and compiling, I would do something like this: git bisect start git bisect good wine-1.1.19 git bisect bad wine-1.1.20
and then I'll do the "git bisect good/bad" thing, like described in the Regression Test tutorial right?

Yes. It may be helpful to test your compiled 1.1.19 version before testing, just in case: git reset --hard wine-1.1.19 ./configure && make depend && make test your app. If it works: git reset --hard origin git bisect start git bisect good wine-1.1.19 git bisect bad wine-1.1.20 ./configure && make depend && make test app here git bisect good/bad rebuild/retest

It still won't launch in 1.2-rc4. Maybe rc5?

The original poster should retest.

You also need to 'cd' to the directory first.
