Bug #: 31071 Summary: DotA 2: overbright/broken lighting effects Product: Wine Version: 1.5.7 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: cephryx@gmx.net Classification: Unclassified
(This is a lengthy one because there are already lots of observations and attempt-fixes to describe.)
DotA 2 is suffering from weird overbright lighting effects issues, best seen on these screenshots: appdb.winehq.org/appimage.php?iId=39263 appdb.winehq.org/appimage.php?iId=39265
All heroes, items and buildings having some lighting effects are affected. Static map decoration (flares, ...) is not (or at least to a very minor extent).
Steps to reproduce: - start the game client and create a lobby in all-pick mode - start the match and pick Lina - have a look at what's supposed to be the hero's flaming hands, or at the visuals of her second spell
See the attachend image for a direct comparison (what it SHOULD vs. what it DOES look like).
My personal observations regarding the problem: - does not seem to occur with other source engine games (HL2, Portal2, L4D2) - persists throughout: -- ubuntu 11.04, 11.10, 12.04 -- the propriatary nvidia graphics driver series 295.xx to 302.17 (and most likely also before) -- wine 1.3.x, 1.4.x and 1.5.x up to 1.5.7 -- 32bit and 64bit systems -- kernel versions 2.6.x to 3.2.0-26-generic -- various window managers (2D as well as 3D-enabled ones) - the only wine registry setting having an effect on the problem seems to be "OffscreenRenderingMode = backbuffer" -- setting it, the overbright effect is gone, but pretty much anything else gets messed up (ambient lighting is too low and somewhat greenish; continuity of visual effects is broken, etc) - no imgame setting / console variable seems to have an effect - none of the options in the 'nvidia-settings' tool has an effect - creating a fresh 32bit wine prefix with 'WINEARCH=32bit' (instead of defaulting to 64bit) has no effect - confirmed to happen on Geforce GTX 8800, GTX 260, GT 330M
Note: Unlike other source games, DotA 2 must be run with the '-nod3d9ex' parameter. Otherwise it won't render at all. However, doing so does not cause the described visual issues on Windows.
I am currently using: - wine-1.5.7, GeForce GTX 260, nvidia driver 302.17, Xubuntu 12.04 x64 (xfwm4.10.0), kernel 3.2.0-26-generic
I am suffering from this bug http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30270 which MIGHT be related to the problem (though I have no evidence to prove this assumption right or wrong).
The three provided logs were created with WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/dota2 wine Steam.exe &> dota2.txt and split around: - steam being fully loaded - dota 2 being fully loaded - creating a lobby, starting the match, picking a hero and entering the game map (gonna add the logs to messages below this one because I cannot create several attachments...)
Though it only seems like a cosmetic problem, this bug results in a SEVERE impact on gameplay, since the player loses track of what's happening when only seeing huge overbright explosions.
Also note the discussion taking place on the game's AppDB site (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=24458), under the message "Weird lighting effects bugs/issues", for some more details.

--- Comment #12 from util0002@gmail.com 2012-07-01 21:13:56 CDT --- I confirm this bug. It happens with every wine version I tried, from 1.3.37 to 1.5.7. My card is a nVidia Corporation C79 [GeForce 9400M] (rev b1) My drivers are the proprietary ones, version 290.10 Debian 64bits, kernel 3.1.0-1-amd64, but 32bits wine.
The introduction of Luna makes the game now unplayable if she is in the game.
Changing OffscreenRenderingMode to backbuffer made the whole in game screen black, except from the UI and a tiny portion of the screen just above the lower UI.

--- Comment #13 from voidcastr cephryx@gmx.net 2012-07-04 05:25:12 CDT --- I just hope we will get some dev attention... since the introduction of Luna (not to be confused with Lina; see second attached screenshot), the bug's a showstopper. The rating could actually be lowered to Bronze because it's impossible to play online as long as the bug persists.

I added override you mentioned, but it didn't change anything. On a side-note, i use clean prefix for dota2. Do you have any other software installed to the prefix which you use for steam + dota2? Did you add MSVC runtime libs 2010 (and if yes, manually, via winetricks or it was included with some other software installer)?
And do you confirm that removal of msvcp100.dll override makes this bug re-appear on your machine?

1) Removing msvc 2010 redist (removed via uninstaller, removed overrides via winecfg) 2) Removing registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\UseGLSL = disabled 3) In file drive_c/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/dota 2 beta/dota/cfg/video.txt i tried to set "setting.cpu_level" to 0 and 1
None of them helped to eliminate any lighting effect problems.

--- Comment #40 from Anton Vorobyov phoenix@mail.ru 2012-07-21 04:33:54 CDT --- Well, i think we better remove all references to Luna from this bug then and create a new one for her nasty aura, as originally everything but luna was described.
Orianna, wine git is current public development version of wine, updated on daily basis in git repository. Wineskin probably has something else on top of wine so your case a bit more complex.
Yuri Shishenko, it could be some session-specific setting you changed before running dota. E.g. after each reboot i had to launch nvidia x server settings to make sure vsync is disabled (this way i got 125 fps in quake live opposed to 60, because previous versions of nvidia driver always turned vsync on by default due to some reason). Could also be some environment variables...

--- Comment #44 from Anton Vorobyov phoenix@mail.ru 2012-07-22 07:28:42 CDT --- Actually it seems it's single bug (luna, word tree, invoker orbs, etc), which *may* appear fixed sometimes during bisect even after broken commit (due to some kind of caching (i use ccache to speed it up) or some random factor). The commit to blame is:
56c9952ee66dc5a7ec5281d874d8f9abe486c418 is the first bad commit commit 56c9952ee66dc5a7ec5281d874d8f9abe486c418 Author: Matteo Bruni mbruni@codeweavers.com Date: Wed Nov 9 22:16:36 2011 +0100

First time i missed it during bisect because world tree effects still were bugged even at commit after it due to that random factor, but after that i made a way more thorough bisect pass checking alot of effects.
I saw a luna aura fixed by reverting this commit on git wine, invoker orbs looked fine, world tree looking fine and so on.
Dota was launched without using -nod3d9ex command line parameter, which is required for bisect testing (it wasn't supported a while ago it seems). The rest settings are made according to this howto: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=24458

--- Comment #48 from Anton Vorobyov phoenix@mail.ru 2012-07-22 09:40:37 CDT --- I meant it's removed completely with this commit being reverted + few more mistypes in my last comment.
Now i think it's actually some kind of post-processing (hdr/bloom) which just doesn't work under wine for some reason.

--- Comment #49 from Matteo Bruni matteo.mystral@gmail.com 2012-07-22 09:53:59 CDT --- I guess that a +d3d log with and without the regression commit would be a start. The most interesting bits are going to be in the first few thousand lines, so you can probably cut the logs to stay in the attachment size limits (but still compress the logs). Also you mentioned that the results may change from a run to the next. If that is actually the case, attaching logs for those runs would probably help too.
BTW, apparently this happens only on Nvidia GT 3xx cards or older, right?

--- Comment #50 from Anton Vorobyov phoenix@mail.ru 2012-07-22 10:33:00 CDT --- I'm using gt260m, yes. Results didn't change from run to run but from recompile to recompile it seems. With commit being reverted results are stable (bug doesn't occur anymore), thus it could be compiler cache error.
I'll make logs, but got a question. Log of whole session is 400+ MB (3-4 MB compressed), and actual load of 'corrupted' resources occurs somewhere in between 200 and 250 MB (first 200mb is game menu which is not affected).
Should i upload first 1k lines of log of complete log in compressed form?

The code affected by the commit is run at the initialization of wined3d, no need to get to the actual part of the game showing the issue. Obviously the log of that part may still help, but just the first chunk of the log should be good enough for now.
1k lines of log may not be enough though. Try to keep as much as you can. If you're wondering how, you can use the head command to get the beginning of the log file, e.g. "head -n 100000 log.txt > log-head.txt" to copy the first 100000 rows of log.txt into log-head.txt.

--- Comment #55 from Matteo Bruni matteo.mystral@gmail.com 2012-07-22 13:55:28 CDT --- Thanks for the logs. Before that commit we weren't reporting post-pixelshader blending for some float texture formats, specifically WINED3DFMT_R32G32B32A32_FLOAT, even though they passed the test. With that commit we now advertise support and that breaks down.
I'm assuming that blending is somehow broken on these hardware/drivers combinations but the test doesn't catch it. I'm attaching a couple of patches, I'd like to get two more logs, one with just the first patch and another with both patches on top of current git. I'm only interested on the test results so the first 1k lines of the logs should be enough.

I tested the game a bit and didn't see anything break due to the commit removal.

I can't say I completely understand what's going on here, essentially alpha component blending with float render targets doesn't do what I expect. I'd usually blame the drivers but since no driver I tested did what I expect, I guess I'm the one to blame... I'll look further into it.

This patch eliminates original issue. However, i don't see any actual visual difference between applying these 3 patches and reverting commit which causes regression. I think i'll make couple of side-by-side screenshots later to confirm it.

It should be the same indeed. Before the regression commit we weren't testing and enabling the "post-pixelshader blending" feature on some float texture formats, after the patch we are. These new patches I've attached to the bug actually test harder for that and now the test fails, so again removing the feature flag.
Earlier i posted couple of screenshots: http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=41100 (wine with reverted commit) http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=41101 (windows)

I suppose the game checks the post-pixelshader blending flag to enable those additional glow effects, which, I guess, don't work correctly for the same reason the stricter test in these patches fails. But I still don't understand this fully, so I can't say for sure.

No, it can't be submitted as is, since the new test doesn't succeed on any GPU/driver I tried and dropping the flag altogether causes rendering glitches in other games. I'm trying to understand what is going on. I'm also checking the full logs you uploaded to see what exactly Dota2 is doing. I'll probably have new patches for you to try in the future...

I think I finally got it.
AFAIU, this is not really a regression, the patch just enabled a different codepath in the game that triggered an existing bug. That is, our sRGB write handling is not correct if blending is enabled.
Please try the attached patch on top of current Wine, removing the various debug patches I previously attached to the bug. The patch probably still needs some work (e.g. the WINED3D_RS_SRGBWRITEENABLE state handler maybe should be in some other place, also it should take care of the other ffp backends) but it should help anyway.

1) http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=41257 (luna's aura under wine with proposed fix) 2) http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=41066 (luna with high video settings and 1.5.9+72 wine) 3) http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=41099 (luna with reverted commit)
1st form is correct one, 2nd shows the most severe impact of this bug (when wine reports capability to support certain effects w/o properly processing them, as far as i understand), 3rd shows another form of this bug (when your system supports post-pixelshader blending, but wine reports that it is not able to do so)
You have 3rd one. Obviously it looks better than 2), but still not properly.

Download wine source: http://sourceforge.net/projects/wine/files/Source/wine-1.5.10.tar.bz2/downlo...
Click on "details" to the right from "hopeful fix" attachment. Copy everything in the window.
Extract the wine source somewhere. Open the folder and create a file. Name it "patch.patch".
Open this file and paste everything there.
Open that folder in terminal.
In terminal use this commands: patch -p1 <patch.patch ./configure make sudo make install.
Make will take some time, may take almost an hour. After that install dota 2 and steam and play.

1st you need to unpack tar.bz archive. In the folder must be files and folders, not archive, then apply a patch. Better to get source from wine git. git clone git://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git ~/wine-git cd ~/wine-git and apply patch.

--- Comment #112 from voidcastr cephryx@gmx.net 2012-08-14 03:55:35 CDT --- I seriously doubt this being the right place for a patch-and-compile howto, but here you go:
- get the wine 1.5.10 sources - extract them: tar -xzvf wine-1.5.10.tar.bz2 - in a terminal, cd to the wine root directory (the one containing e.g. the "configure" script) - enter: patch -p1 < /path/to/patchfile.patch - execute: ./configure - start the build process with: make (you can boost that, passing the number of CPU cores to the "make" command... e.g., if you got 4 cores, call: "make -j4" instead of just "make")
If you run into trouble during configure or make, chances are that you have missing build dependencies... don't know which distro you are on, but for debian based systems (e.g. Ubuntu) sudo apt-get build-dep wine should resolve issue related to that (assuming that you have wine 1.5 in your package sources).
If you're on Ubuntu 12.04 x64 (like me) you're gonna have trouble building a 32bit wine due to a nasty bug... nevertheless, it's possible. Follow the instructions at http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit (the wiki seems to be down/unresponsive right now... take http://tinyurl.com/bq357d8 instead)
Good luck!
---
Btw, seems like the devs have resumed working on the repo. Chances are that the patch gets merged these days - so, if we're lucky, wine 1.5.11 will already include it.

fglrx still doesn't support GL_EXT_texture_sRGB_decode, which is required by current Wine to "enable" the fix.
