Bug #: 33795 Summary: Applications crash when using more than ~500 Mo video memory Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: nob.dir.info@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified
Hello,
I'm experiencing a weird bug since I replaced my old graphic card with a newer one (nVidia GTX 660). I play a lot of game through Wine (SCII, Guild Wars 2, League of Legends, Skyrim), but some of those(Skyrm and SCII) often crash with ugly GL errors, GL_OUT_OF_MEMORY among them.
This crash happens when more than ~500-600 Mo of video memory is used (although my card have 2Gb memory). I tried to limit the memory to 512 Mo through the appropriate registry key, but it still crashes. If I reduce the graphics quality, it runs ok, but then, less than 500 Mo video memory is used. Moreover, when I play the other games (Guild Wars 2, League of Legends), no crash appear; but less than 500 Mo video memory is used too.
I don't think the drivers (nVidia proprietary drivers, 319.23) are in cause, because I easily use 700-800 Mo video memory with Unigine Valley (native) without any crash.
That's why I think this bug _could_ come from Wine (d3d->opengl part?).
Cordially.
P.S. : I'm running on Arch Linux (i386) with kernel 3.9.4 (PAE enabled), KDE 4.10.

--- Comment #1 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2013-06-13 10:57:33 CDT --- It's tempting to ask whether this problem persists with a 64 bit OS.

--- Comment #2 from nob.dir.info@gmail.com 2013-06-13 11:23:28 CDT --- I will try tomorrow, but it will be on a Live-CD... I've no other computer with 64-bit Linux on it.

--- Comment #3 from nob.dir.info@gmail.com 2013-06-14 04:54:53 CDT --- Tried with same drivers, same kernel, but in 64 bit: still crashes.

--- Comment #4 from nob.dir.info@gmail.com 2013-06-30 06:52:07 CDT --- New hint: Using wine in "real" 64-bit(I mean with wine built with --enable-win64), I managed to use ~750 Mo VRAM with Guild Wars 2 in 64-bit mode (desktop using ~100 Mo), and there was no crash. StarCraft II with this version of wine also stopped crashing after one or two games/missions.
However, Skyrim still crashes, even with 64-bit wine, so the bug seems to be really weird.

Here is an example of what happens with Skyrim.

--- Comment #6 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2013-06-30 08:22:28 CDT --- The key line in your log is
(0) : fatal error C9008: out of memory - malloc failed
This is starting to sound like bug 13335 or bug 24826 or bug 33858.
Which version of Skyrim? 1.3.10 (released Dec 2011) added support for 4GB RAM.
When on the true 64 bit system, does setting the LARGEADDRESSAWARE bit on Skyrim, or running wine with "setarch i386 -3 -L -B -R wine ...", help?

--- Comment #7 from nob.dir.info@gmail.com 2013-06-30 08:57:11 CDT --- Thank you very much, setting the LARGEADDRESSAWARE bit functionned well. I'm using Skyrim 1.1, my internet is to slow to update it and I dislike some of the new changes...

--- Comment #10 from Joe joedavison.davison@gmail.com 2013-07-17 02:41:02 CDT --- Despite having the latest version of Skyrim (with Large Address Awareness) I'm still running out of memory.
I have 16GB of system memory and 2GB of video memory. There's no reason why I should be running out of memory, especially with LAA set.
